Showed me where I needed to study

TOEIC Test Practice Exams 2016: TOEIC Book & Preparation Guide with Reading, Writing, Listening & Grammar Practice for the TOEIC Test is a well written and well organized book that is designed to help people to pass the TOEIC Test. The TOEIC Test stands for Test Of English for International Communication. I found this book to personally be very helpful for deciding if I needed to study before taking the TOEIC like I plan to in a year. Since I have grown up speaking English I did not really think that I would need to study, but I am very glad that I got this book as it showed me that I do need to brush up on some of my grammar and listening skills before the test if I want to get a high score. The practice questions really helped me to figure out which areas I need to study for and which ones I could pass right now.

Trellis got it right!

When it comes time to take the TOEIC, many people look all over for the highest quality practice and prep books. Look no further people! This book is perfect as it's filled with reading, writing, and listening and grammar samples to gauge your readiness for the exam. It's not an overwhelmingly long book or test exam, only 136 pages (including half that are answers.) While numerous other companies provide more complex practice exams, this one is clean-cut, easy to dive-in and the perfect measure to gauge your success. Trellis got it right!

you won't feel like you've skipped anything and you truly get a feel ...

Thorough and explained, this preparation for the TOEIC will make you feel confident going into test day! With a wide variety of questions, you won't feel like you've skipped anything and you truly get a feel for what the test will actually be like. There are some weirdly worded questions and some of the dialect is off but it's perfectly easy to understand. This is the closest prep you'll get to being ready for the actual test, without all the gimmicky introductions and unnecessary frills!

His remarkable talent is evident in this superbly annotated treasury of 113 of his greatest games, regarded as one of the classics of chess literature. Study "the chess machine" in action against a host of the world's finest layers, including Marshall, Alekhine, Nimzovich, Dr. Lasjer, Bogolyubov, Tartakower, Marocsy, Euwe, Colle, Znosko-Borovsky, and many others. Although he claimed to have learned more from his losses than his victories, Capablanca was seldom in a position to benefit from defeat. In a career that spanned over 40 years, he lost only 36 serious games.
Capablanca's success was largely due to his enormous natural talent for the game. He disliked learning chess from books and was seldom inclined to prepare for a match. He simply played. And when he did, he made it seem easy. His best games are models of beauty, economy, clarity, and imagination.
Now chess players can study his incredible prowess in this superb games collection, which also contains a revealing biography of Capablanca, his tournament and match record, and an Index of Openings. Any chess player will derive great satisfaction from this book, whether he studies the games for sheer pleasure or to increase his playing skill.

About the Author
This is one of the first books by Fred Reinfeld, who went on to become the most prolific and popular author on chess, and became an author on other subjects as well. Reinfeld wrote more than fifty books on other subjects such as checkers, coin collecting and stamp collecting. Fred Reinfeld won the 1931 New York State Championship, with Fine finishing second. Reinfeld won their individual game. In Pasadena 1932, the strongest grandmaster tournament in the USA in the decade of the 1930s, Fine and Reinfeld both got the same score of 5-6. Fine won their individual game. However, Reinfeld did better against the higher ranked players, including a win over Reshevsky and a draw with World Chess Champion Alexander Alekhine. After that however Reinfeld only played in a few other chess events. He spent the rest of his life writing about the game, not playing it. Fine, by contrast, went on to become one of the strongest players in the world. Fred Reinfeld was born on January 27, 1910. Although Fred Reinfeld is now remembered as a writer about chess and other subjects, he was also a strong player. In the 1950 USCF Rating List he was rated number 6 in the United States with a rating of 2593. He defeated Reshevsky twice and Fine once in tournament games and drew World Champion Alekhine in the grandmaster tournament in Pasadena 1932, the strongest tournament ever played in the Western United States. Reinfeld wrote more than one hundred chess books. In his day, almost all young chess players started off on his books. Nowadays, his books are mostly out of print because they were written in descriptive notation, as this one is. Fred Reinfeld died on May 29, 1964.

Very nice book on Capablanca . Fred's reviews are quite enjoyable . Play through Capablanca's games and increase your chess level and way of thinking about chess . For the price , this book is a bargain . Buy this book please !

The Chess Machine.

For people not familiar with Jose Capablanca, he is generally considered to have been more talented than Bobby Fischer, but didn't posses Bobby's CRAZY work ethic.
Many people do not realize to what extremes bobby pushed himself to be the best.. he had NO contact with the opposite sex, no social life really, all he did was study the game.. Capablanca is referred by fischer himself as the glamour boy of the game.. He Socialized with kings and Queens. He had a small part in one of the first ever black and white films. And generally loved and respected around the world. Which for a chess player is incredible! Capablanca never studied, so his games usually have simple, or safe openings. But like Fischer says. "Capablanca played brilliantly in the middlegame".

The sophistication of his games are not quite appreciated by the beginner. When Capablanca saw, or got an advantage he would just sqeeze it to the very end. Some players do not realize that when you complicate things you can accidentaly give your opponent a way back into the game. As an example just think of GMs going against computers. There is no way they will complicate things because they know they will loose!

Each of his games are a GREAT lesson to anyone who wants to get better. Even his games as a 12 year old phenom going against the Cuban champion are VERY good so donot pass them up!

About the book. Reinfeld doesn't seem to be too fond of Capa. I know he idalized the less perfect play of Alekhine (he was more exciting, and more beatable)

The reason being that he seems to make up excuses for many his opponents. Some being incredibly ridiculous.. My favorite being an excuse he gives alekhine "He got a bad case of capa fright!" ooohhh scarry... O.K Alekhine was going against the "Babe Ruth" of chess. But what kind of man makes up excuses like that in this game? You need Ice in your veins to be succesful (Which I am sure Alekhine being one of the greats had!)

Another thing. He over criticisez his opponents mistakes. I think Lasker once said. "without mistakes we have drawn games". Reinfeld was a solid player in his day, and he should know better! He says little ridiculous stuff like that, and really its not all that bad. Its just stuff thats not necessary! He highlights that dum stuff in some games, and when he reaches some of the greatest games of all time... He doesnt do them any justice whatsoever!!! NONE.

That is why its only 3 stars.

That and the book is not in algebraic, like Irving Chernevs Capa book.
And the other more expensive one that I cannot seem to remember its name.

About the Author

Magnus Nilsson is the head chef of F�viken Magasinet restaurant in Sweden. After training as a chef and sommelier in Sweden he worked with Pascal Barbot of L'Astrance in Paris before joining F�viken as a sommelier. Within a year he had taken over the running of the restaurant, which is currently number 19 in the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants list. Magnus is the author of the F�viken cookbook, also published by Phaidon. He features in the Emmy-Award winning US PBS-TV series, The Mind of a Chef, and the Netfix docu-series, Chef's Table. In 2015 he was awarded the White Guide Global Gastronomy Award.

An Important Journalistic Work

Uffda. I think a lot of the low-star reviewers are getting it wrong because of a misguided expectation for what this book is. It is a chronicle of the wide range of what and how people of the Nordic countries eat, with really beautiful and simple photography. It is not a splashy cookbook from a Food Network television star. It is clear that the author is not shooting for a mass American audience. He's focused on chronicling a true representation of the subject, not recreating classics to appeal to American tastes.

Some reviewers are calling out that this book is not inspiring (I strongly disagree, read the Pastries chapter and tell me you aren't surrounded by the warmth of cardamom and cinnamon), but I believe what they are getting at is the strength of the book. He doesn't care if the recipes make our mouths water. He cares that what he writes is true.

There are several recipes the author does not even like, but he still includes because they are representative of what people from the Nordic countries eat and like. This furthers my opinion of this being primarily a journalistic work, versus a traditional cookbook, as he prioritizes the truth over an attempt to sell.

If you want to be inspired to reach new limits in the kitchen, reach elsewhere. If you want to be come truly educated on this subject, dig in. It is an important work. Well done, Mr. Nilsson. I made the cinnamon buns on Sunday and they were fantastic.

Great resource for home cooking

This is a wondrously huge cookbook. It's not just a collection of recipes but it's also glimpses into Nordic culture and its food history--through photos, chapter prefaces, and recipe background info.

While a small portion of the recipes do call for exotic meats not common in other worlds, many of them can be substituted for other meats. Like the section for Game, the bird in question can be substituted for common quail, Cornish game hen, etc. Of course the exact result may differ, but you can still get a taste of the spirit of the dish and get a unique experience out of it. And not to worry: there are also entire chapters dedicated to the common meats, like beef, pork, and seafood.

The recipes are not overly complex--they don't call for perfect mastery of intricate techniques or fancy tools and equipment. They are humble dishes, but presented from a different perspective and palate than what we may be used to. Many dishes may feel so familiar to you already, but there is something different about it, like maybe it uses a completely different kind of sauce or flavor profile, so it's still approachable and not so exotic seeming that you could never cook it.

I find this book great for getting new ideas for casual home cooking, especially since most recipes use common ingredients already. I especially like the sections covering recipes and history of drinks, jams, and condiments.

I expect to use this book for many years, with many sticky bookmarks sticking out of it. The only con is that the book is never going to stand on a cookbook stand because it's so thick!

The definitive and in depth book for Nordic cooking

This is the book I could have, should have, would have written if I had the experience and depth of knowledge of Nordic cuisine that Magnus has. I have been translating, testing and modifying Swedish recipes for 40 years and find this book to be completely in line with what I already know plus it takes me way beyond what I did not know. If you want to whip a batch of meatballs for a social function this, or nearly any other Scandinavian cookbook will do the job. But if you really want to go in deep on the Nordic food culture you need this one. I have a collection of about 15 Swedish cookbooks and, as Magnus says in the introduction to his book, most of them suck. This one does not suck. Here you can find how to make falukorv or lutfisk from scratch, both recipes not found in any other book I have ever seen. The only negative comment I have is that the language is decidedly British and it can get confusing. It took me a while to figure out what pluck (lungs) were and I had to chuckle at rutabaga, called Swedes in England. So here is Magnus, a Swede, calling a rutabaga a Swede. Oh well.

A non-econ major

I bought this book for an Intro to Micro-Econ class in college. I found that it was helpful, as it introduced and reinforced the basic principles that we were discussing in class. I wouldn't recommend it to someone outside of the classroom looking for some microecon knowledge, but it's not a bad book to study.

Reader thoughts: I love that Aslan is singing to make the world! I love that Digory admits he was wrong to ring the bell and that he wasn't really enchanted. I love when he comes out of the pool and tells Polly he's been there forever. I love that Uncle Andrew is planted. I love that the witch can't do magic in London. I love how Polly and Digory meet. I love that the Jackdaw was the first joke. I love that they planted the toffee tree.

I love that Digory wants so badly to use the apples for his mother and that the witch says the excuses we think ourselves. Here's a paraphrased conversation between him and the witch.
Witch: "Use the apple to make your mother well."
"Oh!" Digory put his hand to his head. For he now knew that the most terrible choice lay before him.
"Cruel, pitiless boy! You would let your own Mother die!"
"But I promised!"
"But you didn't know what you were promising."
"Mother would tell me not to, if she were here."
"She need never know."

Writer thoughts: CS Lewis knows how to write about the hearts of people. I haven't found another author better at writing about what really goes on inside the depths of humans' souls. Orson Scott Card reveals candid glimpses, but it's nothing as consistent as Lewis. What makes me say Lewis does this so well?

Think about Terry Pratchett's explanation of second thoughts (and third thoughts and fourth thoughts). He shows a little of what humans are thinking behind the first layer of thinking. CS Lewis discusses these innermost thoughts quite casually, throwing them in his prose for all readers to consider.

If you saw your enemy drowning, your first layer of thoughts might be, "Somebody help him!" Everyone really is a decent human being on the surface. The next layer might be, "I should help him," but is your compunction here strong enough to overcome the third thoughts ("He deserves to drown") and your fourth thoughts ("I'd probably drown and cause more harm than good") or does your enemy drown? Perhaps there are fifth and sixth thoughts helping you decide what to do in that moment, too.

The thing is, many authors focus on the first layer of thoughts (if they breach inner dialogue at all). Other authors let readers glimpse second and third thoughts. Very good authors make the readers aware of fourth thoughts, even if they don't always state them. CS Lewis consistently lays bare all layers of thoughts/motivations/feelings/impulses/instincts that his characters have at complicated moments.

That's the key, though. He picks just the right moments, when his characters are in full moral dilemma, to show readers how conflicted the characters are.

I love Narnia.

Everyone should love Narnia. I was supposed to read this as a school project. Needless to say, that wasn't exactly a chore for me!

I have read the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe before and this really does explain every part of that, from how the white witch started to how there was another world to who the professor was other than just "professor" and even how the wardrobe got there and became a portal practically.

Not to mention the warning here from Aslan made sense, with the whole world war 2 setting the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe has.

I feel like this should be a big formal review for a book like this, but I can't do that.
But I do know if you're 8 or younger, you won't really get Narnia, so you might as well leave it alone. I had to read Narnia when I was about 8. And not only was I bored, but I had no idea what was going on.

But reading Narnia now, a few years later, and I can't put it down.

So it's great unless you're a smallish child.

A wonderful beginning to a beautiful series of stories. Not only are the biblical references a delight, but the pieces that hearken to modern literature are so much fun to discover. Even Stephen King and Peter Straub have "borrowed" bits from Narnia such as a Talismanic apple to save a dying mother after a quest to retrieve it. Not a children's story by any means, although it can be read and appreciated by children of all ages. Any reader who begins the series with "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" has missed out on a spectacular backstory of the beginning of the world that is Narnia.
