This book brings together a representative selection of Motherwell's writings about art, dating from 1941 to 1988. It contains more than sixteen essays, a number of pieces from exhibition catalogs, more than a dozen public lectures, and all the artist's vanguard editorial work. The last includes his introductions to several volumes of the pioneering series Documents of Modern Art, which he began directing and editing in 1944; his contribution to possibilities, the first magazine devoted to modern art and culture in the United States, and his work on Modern Artists in America, a book designed to bring balanced attention to modern art in the conservative political climate that prevailed in 1951. Excerpts from four interviews, a number of letters, and lectures, some never before published, bring the collection to within three years of the artist's death. A new chronology and an updated bibliography provide much new information.
In a New York Times tribute shortly after Motherwell's death, Hilton Kramer memorialized the artist as the "eloquent and articulate champion of the entire Abstract Expressionist movement, an archivist of the modernist movement as a whole" and expressed regret that Motherwell's "long-awaited" collected works had not yet appeared. A chief spokesman for Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s and a voice of New York's artistic avant-garde in the following decades, Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was an enormously articulate critic and theorist as well as a first-rate painter. This volume is a patchwork of his essays, lectures, interviews, book introductions, letters, epigrams and random jottings, dating from the years 1941 to 1988. Motherwell's verbal collages comprise an ongoing dialogue with the creative process. His writings illumine his formative relationship with Chilean surrealist Roberto Matta, his obsession with death and his friendships with Mark Rothko, David Smith and Joseph Cornell. Motherwell was acutely aware of the modern artist's isolation from society, and his theory of painting, which extolled free association as the artist's means of excavating his own psyche for universal archetypes, stemmed from that sense of apartness. This grab bag of ideas and impressions includes Motherwell's thoughts on Mondrian, Picasso, children's art, Kafka and Baudelaire. As an artist, educator, theorist, and editor, Motherwell (1915-91) was the leading exponent of the Abstract Expressionist art movement. Terenzio ( The Prints of Robert Motherwell , Hudson Hills, 1990), formerly with the William Benton Art Museum, provides clear introductory notes to the chronologically arranged selections of essays, lectures, letters, interviews, prefaces, and exhibition catalog pieces, which date from 1941 to 1988. Educated at Stanford and Harvard, Motherwell soon moved to New York, where emigre Surrealist artists profoundly influenced his modernist views. Included here are several of his editorial prefaces from the "Documents of Modern Art" series, one volume of which ( The Dada Painters and Poets , LJ 7/89. 2d ed.) is considered the finest anthology available on Dadaism. Motherwell is so wonderfully articulate, honest, and passionate that this collection should serve as the definitive source on Abstract Expressionism. Strongly recommended for all collections.

Robert Mother is one of the most influential artists of the last century. A philospohy major at Standford and an Art minor. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris. Many of the art journals of the time were in French. Motherwell interpreted what was being written. Hitler chased all of the artists out of Europe. They came to New York. Artists like Maxst Ernst, Salvidor Dali, Andre Breton, Mondrian, and Joseph Albers. Young American Artists were rubbing elbows with Europe's elite. Motherwell was the conduit. .

His writings are his letters and his lectures He talks about the early days of the Abstract Expressionists. It is a insight into what made America, especially New York the center of the Contemporary Art World.

Helps you understand modern art. Beautiful writing.

I only recently learned about the author. He was both an amazing intellectual and a respected painter. I have been puzzled by most modern art, and I have wanted to know what the heck these artists mean to do and why anyone cares about abstract images with no apparent connection to ordinary experiences. I am still reading the first half of this book, but I am enjoying it immensely and already have gained helpful insights into modern artists' intentions.

Samuel Erskine (MCT)

Samuel Erskine (MCT) has over 15 years' experience in a wide range of technologies and industries (public and private) including working for fortune 500 organizations. In 2009 he founded a consultancy practice organization in the United Kingdom focused on implementing Microsoft System Center systems management and IT Service management products. He merged the United Kingdom organization with Syliance IT Services in 2012 and became the third member of the Syliance global management team. He is a Computer Engineering graduate and holds various technology vendor/industry certifications. He is an active participant in the System Center community with a blog at www.frameworktorealwork.com.

Steven Beaumont

Steve Beaumont has been working in IT since 1998, working his way through the ranks starting with low-end system building and support through to managing a crack team of enterprise class support specialists, and to now provide consultancy and designs for System Center 2012 and Private Cloud solutions.

With the release of Service Manager 2010, he ventured into the dark side of customization and released some solutions to the community via the TechNet Gallery helping to show how to extend the usage of the product.

Anders Asp (MVP)

Anders Asp (MVP) started his IT career working with storage and backup solutions, but discovered Service Manager back in 2009 and has been working full time with the product ever since. He is currently working at a Swedish company named Lumagate as a Service Manager Specialist and Product Manager. He also teaches the official Service Manager course at the two largest training centers in Sweden and has presented at several large events.

He is very active on the official Service Manager forums at TechNet and regularly blogs about the product on his own blog at www.scsm.se. In April 2012, he was awarded with the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) title in the "System Center Cloud and Datacenter Management" area.

Dieter Gasser

Dieter Gasser is an IT Consultant and co-founder of the company Syliance IT Services, headquartered in Switzerland, and specializes in Service Manager delivery and customization.

He has been working in IT for more than 13 years and has had a strong focus on Microsoft technologies. He started his career as an application and database developer, and was later appointed IT Manager for an international manufacturing company.

In 2010 he entered the systems management and automation market. With his technical and managerial background, he has been focusing on Service Manager ever since. Together with his colleagues, he delivers datacenter management and automation solutions based on Microsoft System Center to customers all over Switzerland.

Andreas Baumgarten (MVP)

Andreas Baumgarten (MVP), IT Architect with the German IT service provider H&D International Group, has worked as an IT pro for more than 20 years. Microsoft technologies have always accompanied him and he can also look back on 14 years of experience as a Microsoft Certified Trainer.

Since 2008, he has been responsible for the field of System Center technology consulting and ever since he took part in SCSM 2010 and 2012 and System Center Orchestrator 2012 Technology Adoption Program with H&D.

With his deep inside technology know-how and his broad experience across the System Center product family and IT management, he now designs and develops Private Cloud solutions for cusomers all over Germany.

In October 2012, he was awarded with the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) title for "System Center Cloud and Datacenter Management".

What I needed

There isn't much out there in the way of reference material for SCSM 2012 and this book helped me configure it for our organization.
It is a "cookbook" so it doesn't go into a lot of detail, which I would have liked to see. We upgraded so a lot of things I needed to figure out I had to go to other resources for.

I would recommend it though for anyone needing a good reference material.

Good book about SCSM 2012

Anyone interested in System Center Service Manager 2012, is likely to find interesting new Service Manager Cookbook, published by Packt Publishing and written by several MVPs and MCT, the experts in this field. Since Service Manager 2012 is much more than just another product from the System Center family, and you definitely can't just click it through, it is more than advisable to consult the literature of this type before entering the stage of planning and deployment. The book therefore begins with the story of a rather non-technical ITSM Framework and processes, ITIL, Asset Management, Service Request, Incident and Problem Management and the IT Service Desk processes and operations. The first chapter ends with a discussion of service level management, which is a very important component. The rest of the book is divided into 11 chapters and two appendices, deals with the administration and configuration of Service Manager 2012, from the standpoint of its individual components and resources they manage, but also on the processes that are carried out within a manageable IT infrastructure. It ends with a chapter on the automation of processes through the Service Manager which is probably what everyone aspires. Very valuable source of information, I recommended this!

A nice instructional workbook

There is not much out there on Service Manager 2012 quite yet, so I purchased this as quickly as possible. While there isn't a lot of NEW information (meaning information you can't find out there on blogs), this book provides you a nice, easy to follow, centralized guide for your necessary modifications. While you can find what you need on the blogs, I would still recommend this book as an informative guide for those wanting to utilize service manager.

Most books on 2012 are system center wide, only dedicating a chapter or so to service manager. It was worth the money to grab the Kindle version. I'm sure as time progresses, more material will be made available, but for today's context, this was a great addition.

About the Author
Victor P. Eroschenko completed both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of California at Davis. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology in 1961. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent the next three years in Germany. Eroschenko returned to the university in 1968 and received a Master of Science in Anatomy in 1970. In 1973, he was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Anatomy. That same summer, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho to teach anatomical sciences to both medical students and undergraduate students. Since 1973, Eroschenko has been team-teaching Human Gross Anatomy and Medical Histology to freshman medical students in the WAMI Medical Program. He also teaches a one-semester course in Human Anatomy and Physiology to University of Idaho undergraduate students that major in Allied Health Sciences.

Eroschenko's research interests lie in the area of Reproductive Toxicology. During his academic career, he has authored or co-authored over 40 scientific papers that were published in refereed national and international journals. He is also the author of the Laboratory Manual for Human Anatomy for use with Models and Prosected Cadavers, Second Edition. He was also the editor of the 6th edition of DiFiore's Atlas of Normal Histology, and is presently the author of the Seventh and Eighth Editions of DiFiore's Atlas of Histology with Functional Correlations. Eroschenko has just completed an interactive CD-ROM disk on Human Histology, which should be published in the near future.

Pros and Cons...

I used this book for medical school histology in combination with the Junqueira textbook. I liked this atlas because it is predominantly drawings and so you get to see the "ideal" appearance of things. There are lots of labels on the drawings pointing out the different features of what is being illustrated...this is very helpful and other atlases and textbooks I saw did not do as good a job with this. There is some text as well which is mildly helpful.

Other people in my medical school class used the wheater book, gartner, or strete and seemed happy. There were a few instances where I would have preferred to see a photograph instead of a drawing, but overall I was very happy with this book and would use it again. This book was particularly helpful in the "lab" portion of histology when identifying cells and tissue structures on slides.

An invaluable reference work for Histology students

I am a senior physiology/neurobiology major taking a course in histology who is fortunate enough to have a copy of Di Fiore's atlas. In fact, I have all but substituted the atlas for the course textbook. Here's why... According to Aristotle, art captures the universal essence of things. In few places have I seen the truth of this claim as clearly as in Di Fiore's Atlas. The illustrations in this remarkable atlas truly present the structural features of tissues and organs in an idealized, universal way that has helped me identify actual, imperfect samples time after time. Not only are the images of the atlas of superb quality; the text ("functional correlations") are also top-class. In fact, Eroschenko's text is what every student dreams of: a streamlined presentation of only the most relevant information, without the choppy feel of an outline. So if you are looking for a histology atlas with excellent illustrations that show the universal features of tissues and organs and a very economical, no-nonsense text, then Di Fiore's Atlas is for you!

This would make a good text for an introductory course (perhaps a second year college course), but would not be considered anywhere near superior for any type of advanced course (e.g. 400-level college course, graduate study, medical school).

The strengths of DiFore's Atlas are that it is a good blent between an atlas and a text. There are a good number of pictures as well as very concise text. The clinical correlations are a very good addition, but seems to be less and less a distinguishing factor as there has been a great shift to a clinical emphasis in the sciences.

The majority of the images in this atlas are artistic renditions (i.e. drawing) of histological sections. Therefore, you are getting the most ideal situations.

But there's the rub. The main problem with this atlas is that it predominantly drawings and not real histological samples. It would have been much better if it were around 1:1 or 1:3 drawings to images. You do not get to train yourself to identify what is background "noise" and what are actual important landmarks and cells.

I would not recommend buying this text unless you are trying to learn histology on your own outside of class.

Good Omnibus of Profile, Pictures, and Recipes

Joel Robuchon is arguably the greatest living, working chef in the world. Patricia Wells is arguably one of the leading culinary journalists writing in English. And, Wells has already done a work on the cuisine of Joel Robuchon in the volume `Simply French' that won a James Beard award for best international cookbook in 1992. All this suggests this should be a great book. I also found things in this book that were not in `Simply French' which made this book more interesting to the reader; however, I did not find this a great, inspiring book for the cook. For the little concerns that lessened the overall impact of the volume, I give it only four stars rather than five.
I rate culinary works according to several different criteria, depending on the intended audience. The major accomplishments I value are lots of good, attainable, interesting recipes as in `James Beard's American Cookery'; masterful description of culinary technique as in Thomas Keller's `The French Laundry Cookbook', thoughtful reflections and revealing comments on culinary terroir, history, or culture as in Patience Gray's `Honey from a Weed'; accurate portrait of a regional cuisine as in David Downie's `Cooking the Roman Way', or exceptional presentation of a particular ingredient or branch of cooking as in Sherry Yard's masterful `The Secrets of Baking'. Memoirs such as Ruth Reichl's `Tender at the Bone' and straight journalism as in Tony Bourdain's `Kitchen Confidential' have their own special criteria, most of which is simply based on successfully telling an interesting story.
After all these reflections, I have to rate this volume somewhat below the very highest rank. The book addresses three subjects related to the career and art of Joel Robuchon.
The first subject is a brief chronicle of Robuchon's career, plus some comments on the careers of six of Robuchon's most prominent students. This section is a bit thin, but it does contain some interesting connections. It explains, for example, Robuchon's connection with and appearances on the Japanese produced show `Iron Chef' which appears regularly in translation on the Food Network. It turns out that Robuchon became enamored of Japanese cuisine early his career and he has a restaurant in Tokyo. He was also a very successful competitor in French culinary competitions early in his career. This section also reminds one of the practice of Thomas Keller. Wells describes Robuchon's kitchen as being quiet as a monastery, almost exactly the same description given by Michael Ruhlman of the kitchen at the French Laundry.
The second subject is a catalogue of Robuchon's favorite ingredients and their suppliers. Here is another parallel with Keller's French Laundry book, as Keller insisted that the book include profiles his of most important suppliers. Robuchon's hallmark ingredients are potatoes, caviar, scallops, cepes, sweetbreads, truffles, chestnuts, and almonds.
The third and largest section is a presentation of five or six recipes for each of the eight ingredients. Each recipe is the creation of Robuchon and one of his six disciples. Every recipe is spelled out in exquisite detail rarely seen in the methods of merely mortal chefs. Cooking times are given from exact milestones such as the time at which a pot of blanching water returns to a boil after adding vegetables. I confess some times and instructions are quite surprising to my totally amateur experience. I almost feel I need an explanation for why they poach asparagus for a full twenty minutes. I find asparagus totally limp and unappealing if it spends much more than five minutes in boiling water. Another major surprise is when a recipe puree's cooked scallops to be formed into quenelles on a mushroom puree. This brings back the comment of French cooking as being designed to suit people with bad teeth. In spite of the exquisitely detailed recipes, I did find a missing step here and there, where, for example, the recipe asks that cheese and potato slices be overlapped in a gratin without having given any instructions on how to slice the cheese.
A truly expert photograph of each finished dish accompanies every recipe by Herve Amiard, Robuchon's personal photographer. All are done with the food plated on a white plate, photographed from directly above the dish, with lighting always coming from the upper left (at about 2 o'clock). Dishes requiring special techniques as with grilled wild mushrooms with eggplant caviar are accompanied with detailed photographic montages and instructions to be certain that the reader can understand and follow the technique. This technique alone uses sixteen well-executed photographs.
This book includes two supplementary tables that enhance its value as a collection of recipes. The first is a tabulation of cooking times for each recipe, by ingredient. Don't get any impression that this book is a resource for quick cooking. The average prep and cook time is 90 minutes and some are as long as 10 hours. The second is a detailed table of contents. It is a little odd that these two tables duplicate a lot of information and their objectives could have been accomplished on two rather than on four folio-sized pages.
I am truly impressed by the modesty of the principle subject of the book and his collaborators. I just reviewed a book by a lesser French chef which might have been subtitled `An Advertisement for Myself'. In all, I found less new knowledge in this book than I found confirmation of statements by other great chefs. Robuchon, for example, confirms an observation made by Daniel Boulud that a cornerstone of culinary technique is repetition. You prepare a dish many, many times over until you know your ingredients and your techniques intimately.
Unlike Boulud's `Letters to a Young Chef', I don't think this book is required reading for foodies or professional chefs, but I think it is good stuff. It does several good things, but nothing great.

This is an extraordinary cookbook and, at least in the French edition, a book printed on paper so luxurious as to make the volume weigh twice as much as you might think it would. But, to the cooking: these are sumptuous and wonderful recipes and preparations by one of the great contemporary French chefs. The outlook on food and eating does assume that you have ready and easy access to both truffles and caviar. There are extensive photos and text about the Joel Robuchon restaurant, and also about the purveyors and sources of many of the food types. A lovely book in every way, but not a Julia Child hand holder for the beginner or for those unprepared to spend what it takes to use the ingredients called for in the recipes. First rate.

Old Robuchon

This is a great book to see some of Joel Robuchons work. The down side is it is a bit dated. If you are a serious culinary student interested in the works of Robuchon then I say you need this book. If you are looking for a Robuchon recipe book then you need a book called "The Complete Robuchon" I promise you will not be dissatisfied.

Another wonderful Assassin's Creed artbook

I like Assassin's Creed artbooks because they usually feature beautiful landscape artworks of historical places from the past. In Unity, it's in Paris during the French Revolution. Presentation style is similar to the earlier artbooks with a good mixture of character designs and environment art.

The costume designs for all the characters are beautiful and detailed. I've always wondered how people in those times managed with so many layers of clothing and how heavy they weigh with all those accessories and weapons hanging all around. Almost all the characters are male except Elise De La Serre.

The other artworks are all on the landscapes, interiors and key scenes. It's really cool to see how the artists interpret old Paris. There are the rooftops of Paris with their familiar chimneys. exquisite monuments such as the Conciergerie, Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower and other landmarks and less savoury places. There are some really nice textures going on that show the nitty-grittiness of the places. I really enjoy looking at the architecture design of buildings at that time.

The artworks are generally beautiful although some pieces are quite rough, thankfully in minority. Composition for most of the environment art are fantastic, and really captures the scenes well.

The book a 192-page hardcover. There's also a 500-copies limited slipcase edition that comes with two signed art prints from Ludovic Ribardi�re and Gilles Beloeil. For the limited edition, you've to get it from publisher Titan Book's website

It's a great companion to the video game.

Ubisoft quality. I bought dragon age art book, same prize but has double thickness then this. Plus there's no much pics about design, its just some colored conceptual illustration. Wheres the sketches for historical item study?

It was the realization of a dream as old as mankind. On December 17, 1903, two bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio, achieved the first sustained, powered, heavier-than-air flight in a machine of their own design and construction. This book offers a concise and fascinating history of that remarkable accomplishment, much of it in the words of the inventors themselves. The heart of the book is Orville Wright's personal account, written in connection with an obscure lawsuit filed against the U.S. government. Long forgotten until a typewritten copy was discovered among the Wright papers at the Library of Congress, it is the best, most detailed account of how the Wright brothers succeeded in creating the machine that lifted man into the sky on wings.
The brothers first became interested in the problem of flight after reading about the glider experiments of Otto Lilienthal, a 19th-century German engineer. Experimenting first with kites and gliders, they developed a revolutionary wing design that helped solve the crucial problem of maintaining lateral equilibrium. Later, they added a movable rudder that eliminated the tendency of the machine to go into a tailspin. In addition to these critical innovations, the two inventors developed new accurate tables of "life" pressures and an original theory of air propellers. Slowly, methodically, with patience, perseverance, ingenuity, and inspired invention, they solved the problems that had defeated so many experimenters before them.
Finally, on a gusty winter day in North Carolina, the Wright brothers flew their little motor-driven biplane off the sand at Kitty Hawk (actually Kill Devil Hills) and into the pages of history. Although the first flight lasted only about 12 seconds and covered barely 120 feet, it was the first time a machine carrying a man and driven by a motor had lifted itself from the ground in controlled free flight. A new era had begun and the world would never be the same again.
The achievement of the Wright brothers is placed in historical context in the absorbing and informative introduction to this volume, written by Fred C. Kelly, author of two standard works on the Wrights. Mr. Kelly has also written an illuminating commentary, including fascinating anecdotes about the Wrights, their personalities and later aspects of their career. As an extra bonus, a lively popular account of the Wrights' success, written in 1908 by both brothers, has been included in an Appendix. Enhanced by 76 photographs, including many rare views of the Wrights and their flying machines, this book offers a thrilling reading experience for anyone interested in aviation, its pioneers, or the mechanics of flights.

How the Wright Brothers changed travel

Well written book about two brothers who had a vision and made it happen. The Wright brothers solved a mystery the of flight that escaped many others before them. What is ignored in the telling of the Wright brothers is the third man who remained in the background, The three worked as a team in all aspects running the businesses and in designing the first powered airplane. Charles Taylor, a self taught machinist, without plans made from scratch the light weight engine they needed; no other manufacturer of engine could provide one. Taylor's machining skill was needed to make the metal parts and the vital light weight engine needed to make flying possible. Because no accurate and detailed notes or diaries were kept during all the activity that went into making powered flight possible Taylor's part in the endeavor was lost.

The story is best in their own words.

I liked Tom Crouch’s “The Bishop's Boys: A Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright” and when I saw this referenced I bought it. I must say it had real resonance while adding context. It’s short and concise and help’s you to understand what drove them (even after having read a 600 page biography). I recommend it to anyone who admires the Wright Bros. as I do. I’m not sure if you should read this before or after “The Bishop's Boys” but either way they’re both must reads for aviation aficionados.
This is a picture book and the illustrations are excellent but you’ve already seen most (but not all) of them, but I was most interested in the text, you’re left wanting more - if only Orville had written an autobiography.

GREAT book, About two GREAT People

I'm an Aeronautical Engineer, retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, a Division of United Technology Corporation, a pilot with a Commercial rating, and over 55 years of flying experience......having flown Piper Cubs, T-28's, T-birds, B-47's, F-84's, F-86H's, and Cessna 172's, and 182's....Lots of fun and experiences! The book tells it like it was for two young brothers to invent, and perform for the first time, controlled flight. It was an inspiration to me and to any one. Other customers should obtain this book to share the excitement and model of what can be done if you are dedicated, and willing to 'keep at it'!
