About the Author
Katherine Bomer, author of Hidden Gems and Starting with What Students Do Best, is one of the field's most gifted writers as well as one of its most gifted teachers of writing. In more than two decades of teaching and consulting, she has used her writers' eye to focus on how craft isn't just an instructional goal but an instructional tool that allows writers to go grow well beyond the range of most publically available assessments. An internationally known consultant and frequent keynote speaker, Katherine began her consulting career with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. In addition to Writing a Life, she is the coauthor of the Heinemann title For a Better World (with Randy Bomer) and delivers on-site PD through Heinemann Professional Development Services. Chicken Soup for the Literacy Soul

I have come to expect a similar routine when I sit down to read professional texts. I start on page one, I let my eyes run over the text, I highlight, I mark up the margins, and by the very last page, the appetite I had for new information is satisfied. While I know I will be hungry again in the future, usually, by the end of a book, I feel good for the moment. Every once in awhile, however, I encounter a unique reading experience and the unexpected happens. As I read, I am so taken by the delectableness of the ideas, my appetite is only whetted. When I reach the last page, I want more, I crave more, I simply demand that I have to have more. Katherine Bomer's Hidden Gems was that kind of read for me.

Hidden Gems is an important book about seeing student writing with fresh eyes and fresh perspectives. Bomer brings examples of student writing to the table and challenges readers to see past glaring errors and awkward language constructions. She teaches us to read student writing with the same reverence that we use when reading the work of beloved authors. Her common-sense approach reminds us that nudging students toward greatness is not rocket science. It's about honoring student writing voices and complimenting their grand efforts to share their ideas through writing.

Ever sit down to read a student's piece of writing and feel like you're grasping for a compliment? Feel like you only notice what to TEACH them? There is beauty. It is there, and Katherine is pulling us closely to show us.

Outstanding!! I purchased the book based on a recommendation from Leah Mermelstein. I used it in preparation for a presentation I was doing around assessment and student writing with K-2 teachers. We used Katherine Bomer's protocol for looking at writing and I couldn't believe how our thinking about student writing changed from a skills perspective to one of meaning. Absolutely wonderful read!! Your understandings will deepen and grow!

Warren J. Smith (Carlsbad, CA) is Chief Scientist at Kaiser Electro-Optics and an independent consultant. He is one of the most widely known writers and educators in optical design, the author of three editions of Modern Optical Engineering, as well as Modern Lens Design and Practical Optical System Layout.

Great Reference for Lens Design

I've worked as a lens designer for 30 years. In that time, many people have had questions about lens design. If I was unable to answer the question in an hour or less, I would hand them a copy of Modern Optical Engineering. Warren Smith did the industry a tremendous favor by writing this book and updating it every so often.
The book starts with a four chapter overview of first order optics: cardinal points, image position and size, paraxial ray tracing and so on. The next two chapters introduce optical aberrations. Although all of the different ways of describing aberrations (transverse, longitudinal, angular and wavefront) are mentioned, Smith focuses on transverse. Readers specifically interested in the wavefront formulation would be advised to refer to Welford's "Aberrations of Optical Systems" or Kidger's "Fundamental Optical Design". The next few chapters provide valuable information for lens designers, but it's hard to summarize them as a unit. Included in this group is Chapter 9. Stops, Apertures, Pupils and Diffraction, to which I've referred more people than any other.
With the background covered, Chapters 13 starts the main section of the book on how to go about designing lenses. Had Smith taken the time to do a more thorough rewrite, rather than primarily adding chapters, this section could have been more cohesive, but it is good enough as it is. Chapters 13 and 14 cover optical system layout. They are followed by a chapter on Wavefront Aberrations and MTF that was called "Image Evaluation" in earlier editions. This chapter is critical for understanding how well a lens design will perform. Chapters 16-18 walk the reader through the process of lens design, giving a number of examples. Smith was an expert, so the gems offered in these chapters bear repeated reference. Chapter 19 is an attempt to fill a void left when Cox's "A System of Optical Design" went out of print. Cox's Lens Performance Section, with its hundreds of evaluated patented lens designs provided a wealth of starting points for a generation of lens designers. Smith's chapter with 62 evaluated designs, including the OSLO performance report, is a bit broader in coverage, but has only a small fraction of the designs.
Smith closes the book with a chapter that gives a background on how to work with an optical manufacturer and one on working with lenses you can purchase off the shelf.
There are many other books on lens design, but Smith's is a classic.

The best introduction to optical engineering

Without doubt, this is the best general survey of optical engineering, in or out of print. The book shows both the author's broad experience as well as his ability to apply theory to practice and then tell others how to do the same. The book is far superior in its selection of topics and in its clarity and accuracy of presentation to the alternatives. This is definitely an optical ENGINEERING book, not an Optics 101 text for undergraduate physics students. The book is useful for engineers or scientists from other fields who need to learn some optics, and for experienced practitioners who need a reference and refresher on particular topics. To cite one example of the book's reliability, suppose you wish to use the Planck function to estimate how much optical power you can couple into an optical fiber from a quasi-blackbody source such as an incandescent filament. Smith's version of the Planck function is dimensionally correct and will give you the quantitatively correct answer, and his treatment of the Lagrange invariant will teach you the right way to think about the problem. Neither of those things is true of most of the alternatives. The book is focused mainly on image-forming optical systems, and only skips lightly over topics such as optical fibers and coherent beam propagation. Nevertheless, if you only buy one engineering book on optics, this should be it.

Very Good

Look, the joker who says this is a High School level text is dead wrong. Having been in the field for 10 years now and with a degree in optics, I tell you this is a very good text. No one book can make you a good engineer in any discipline, but lots of books help. The folks I know who are seriously involved in optics, all have this book. No one book is the bible of optics. Problem with "engineers" nowadays....not a broad enough background in engineering in general or even in their field...to specialized. Know your basics, get lots of books.

About the Author
Charles Hornsby has been a writer, analyst and occasional contributor to Kenya's politics for more than 25 years. He has combined a professional career in IT with a multinational company (which has allowed him the opportunity to live in Ghana, Kenya, The Netherlands and Malaysia) with a deep engagement with Kenya, its politics and and prosects. He completed his doctorate on Kenya at St. Antony's College Oxford in the 1980s and was the co-author in 1997 of the influential Multi-Party Politics in Kenya with David Throup. a most revealing book about the KENYAN society, its modus vivendi, modus operandi,in terms of its political ways of the day.

The book introduces you to some geopolitical atmosphere as it existed in the colonial days of Kenya denoting the ruthlesness of the people in power positions. I want to note that there are not much writings concerning the peasantry however much ado with the leadership of the electees. It sometimes addresses the finance climate of Kenya.As i read the book,I compared the situation against that of other African countries about which I have read and thus concluded that Kenya may demonstrate a more advanced community. By and large ,the book is quite entertaining and offers a reality approach to this African country which has developed as a rather valiant colony of England. It gave me quite a complete picture of the nature of a dedicated African people surmounting the pains peculiar to the formation of a new society in a milieu of traditional values.

About the Author

Born in 1947, B. J. G. van der Kooij earned an MBA at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, Holland in 1975, and an MSEE with a focus on microelectronics at Delft University of Technology, Holland in 1977. He began his professional career in upper management at Holec NV, a manufacturer of electrical power systems. From 1982 to 1986, he was a member of the Dutch Parliament, where he used his expertise in the fields of economics, industrial and science policies, technological innovation, and aviation policy. He later became a part-time professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. He went on to launch his own startup company Ashmore Software BV.

The author of three books and a number of articles on innovation, he was accepted as a PhD candidate at at his alma mater, the Delft University of Technology, in 2013, where he aims to develop a multidimensional model explaining innovation.

Van der Kooij is married and spends most of his time working in the South of France.

Christopher Bulstrode did his undergraduate training at both Oxford and Cambridge, and his post-graduate training in London. He has been Clinical Reader in Oxford since 1987 where he has been in charge of the Undergraduate Teaching of trauma and orthopaedics.

This book walks you through step by step on how to use autocad and has practice problems at the end of each chapter.
I bought this book on Amazon for around 18 dollars. Everybody else in my class was paying around 100+ for it everywhere else.
Same book, best price. Amazon wins.

Great book. Word for word, problem for problem as newer editions only for less money. Good buy. Order from seller who ships with service other than usps. I bought expedited shipping for school but received it a week and half later.
