Still Good for Today

This is a collection of BTW's Sunday sermons to his Tuskegee students. Originally published in 1902, the lessons on thrift, clean living, sharing what you learn with others, the need to read, and the value of education of the heart as well as the head are still valuable a century later. Does not date too badly and with so many young people growing up today without this kind of advice in the home, it's needed just as much today.
Many uninformed people dismiss BTW as an "Uncle Tom," but the publication of more of his writings like this will show that in spite of any faults, he was a very useful person in the upliftment of people. Read it and see.

Character Building (An African American Heritage Book) This book has so many wonderful life lessons which are just as powerful and thought-provoking today as they were when Booker T. Washington wrote them at the turn of the 20th century. I try to read an essay to my students on a regular basis because the essays really hit home with some of the issues my students have. The essays are well-written and easy to read and understand.

About the Author
Stuart H. James of James & Associates Forensic Consultants, Inc., is a graduate of Hobart College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology and chemistry in 1962. He received his MT(ASCP) in medical technology from St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, in 1963. Graduate courses completed at Elmira College include homicide investigation, bloodstain pattern analysis, and forensic microscopy. He has completed more than 400 hours of continuing education and training in death investigation and bloodstain pattern analysis. A former crime laboratory supervisor in Binghamton, New York, he has been a private consultant since 1981.

Jon J. Nordby, PhD, D-ABMDI, earned his advanced degrees from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst. He works as a forensic science consultant for Final Analysis Forensics, an independent consulting practice in medical-legal death investigation, forensic science, and forensic medicine. He specializes in scene reconstruction, and evidence recognition, collection, and analysis, including bloodstain pattern analysis, ballistics, firearm and gunshot residue testing and the investigation of police shootings. He serves the National Disaster Medical System as a medical investigator and forensic specialist with the Region X DMORT team.

Suzanne Bell, PhD, earned a B.S. degree in 1981 from Northern Arizona University with a dual major in chemistry and police science (criminal justice). She obtained her master’s degree in forensic science from the University of New Haven in Connecticut and her Ph.D. in chemistry from New Mexico State University. She joined the faculty of West Virginia University in 2003 in the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry. Her research interests include forensic toxicology, ion mobility spectrometry, and gunshot residue. She works with students at all levels (undergraduate to doctoral) in chemistry and forensic science and is active in international forensic science outreach.

Excellent Overview and Potential Textbook!

This text serves as an excellent overview of the forensic science field, and could serve very well as an introductory or intermediate level textbook. It was only lacking one thing that would be of value to making it a perfect instructional choice, and that is, labs. Hopefully, the authors are putting together an accompanying lab book! The chapter summaries, review material (vocab, primarily), and review questions are impeccable, and the references and further reading are exemplary.I am very happy with my purchase, and when we are ready to upgrade our forensic science textbooks (very soon, I hope!), I would go with this text without hesitation. Please, just prepare a lab book!

Entertaining to Read.

This astounding book is perfect for anyone studying forensics. The nine chapters of the book are highly informative, and like every great textbook, it has review questions, summaries, and vocabulary guides. The chapter Forensic Anthropology is all about studying human remains to learn about the person. While this book is probably focused more towards criminal investigation, the chapter will be of use to archeologists who have to study human remains. An entire chapter is devoted to entomology, because the presence of flies and maggots in the body can be used to determine the time of death. There’s a chapter on fire and explosives, because tracing for accelerants is a major part of criminal investigation where a fire occurs. Further chapters cover tracing bullets, identifying body fluids, and ethics.

One of the greatest things about this book is the use of case studies. The author includes stories about investigations into murders, thefts, accidents, and others which don’t involve crime. Each of these chapters would probably be a different specialty, since the average detective is probably not trained to do arson investigations. That would probably be the job of someone in the fire department.

I will give this book a big thumbs up as a starter for criminology students. It’s a great way to begin learning about forensics, and it doesn’t bore you with lots of jargon.

The information is very good. I know and respect many of the authors

I used this textbook for my undergraduate level Fundamentals of Forensic Science course, this spring. The information is very good. I know and respect many of the authors, which is at least one of the reasons why I chose this textbook. The 9 sections worked nicely with a semester class. I also enjoyed the flow of the book. I am a forensic anthropologist, by trade, but I have also studied the other disciplines. I will definitely utilize this textbook again, next year! Thank you!

Strudel-sweet Peterson Christian Historical Romance, 1896

2 love triangles. One holds sparring females at its base. The other finds 2 men ogling the same girl. To complicate the plots the triangles are linked--like the horse-pulled chains tugging sleds of block ice. Best put your woolly mittens on for this novel, Relationships are getting warm-to-hotter on Minnesota ice. Rumors and accusations fly faster than cold chips off the ice-saw. Tracie Peterson excels at taking lake-ice frigidity to a boiling romance before a blazing log fire. Ah, 1896, when men were men & strong women were fated to be kissed.

A great historical look at late-19th century ice cutting and cabinetry industry.
Theme: God's sovereignty.
Note: fetching cover, a beautiful team powerfully pulling through crisp white drifts. And the girl's cute too.
A canter-pace ending will satisfy the robustness of Swede icecutters, "Ja."

Bundle yourself in a quilt & get wrapped up in Tracie Peterson's romance story of "The Icecutter's Daughter." One negative: this Swedish icecutting clan eats lots of strudel and cookies and readers can almost smell the enticing sugar between the pages.

A Minnesota Mystery

My next book review is The Icecutter's Daughter, by Tracie Peterson from the series Land of Shining Water.

As the lone female in a houseful of men, Merrill Krause dedicates her life to caring for her family and their business, as her dying mother asked. Besides, it suits her; she's never felt like she fits what most people expect in a girl- she'd rather work with her father's horses and assist with the ice harvest. And though she's been mostly content up to this point, a part of her wonders if there will ever be anyone who will notice her amid the bevy of brothers determined to protect her from any possible suitors.

When Rurik Jorgenson arrives in their small Minnesota town to join his uncle's carpentry business, he soon crosses paths with Merrill. But unlike other men, who are often frightened away by her older brothers, Rurik isn't intimidated by them or by Merrill's strength and lack of femininity. The attraction between them begins to build . . . until Rurik's former fianc�e shows up with wild claims that bring serious consequences to Rurik.

In my opinion, this book has just the right amount of mystery and romance to keep my attention and "stay up late to finish just one more chapter". I liked Merrill because she was compassionate and willing to help her father and brothers instead of thinking of herself. She had discovered she loved caring for her father's Belgian horses that he raised. The descriptions of the goodies prepared throughout the book made me hungry as Tracie described the tempting meals that Merrill served in the story. I wish she would share the recipe of the carrot cookies (Page 46).
With the descriptions of building furniture in Rurik's uncle's carpentry business I could almost smell the fresh wood as it was being cut. The dilemma in Rurik's relationship with his pre-arranged fianc�e sure gives the story a puzzle to solve. His best friend, Nils, challenges Rurik as they share their idea of becoming business partners.
I recommend this book to someone wanting a good fictional story with plenty of twists.

Cute

The story is set in Minnesota about 1890's and it's first in its series. It was a good read with some mystery and some romance and a crazy ex-fiance that kept appearing to wreak things. I did feel that the book was slow in places and a bit predictable. It isn't my favorite of Tracie Peterson, but it was still entertaining. I liked Merrill, she is a strong woman who on her mother's death bed promised that she would care for her father and brothers. She is a hard worker and I liked that aspect of the book. Overall it was a fun read.

Schneider is Professor Emeritus of Human Resource Management at HEC University of Geneva, Switzerland. As well as her research into cross-cultural management, she has actively worked to internationalise the 'mindsets' of managers and companies. Her current research focuses on diversity and corporate responsibility. Jean-Louis Barsoux is Senior Research Fellow at IMD, Switzerland. He is the author of several books on culture and diversity in management, and has written for Harvard Business Review and Financial Times. Gunter K. Stahl is Professor of International Management at Vienna University of Economics & Business (WU Vienna). Prior to joining WU Vienna, he served for eight years as a faculty member at INSEAD and held visiting appointments at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, the D'Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Hitotsubashi University. He has published in lead-ing aca-demic and practitioner-oriented journals and has designed and taught cross-cultural management courses at the Masters, MBA, and Executive MBA levels for universities and business schools around the world.
