Engineering firms traditionally have sought expert advice on these aspects from management schools, often regarding these aspects of engineering practice as something to do with psychology or organisational behaviour. The results are normally disappointing because management schools and psychologists have limited insight and understanding of the technical dimensions in engineering work. Little if any of the material in this book can be obtained from management texts or courses. Management schools have avoided the technical dimension of workplace practices and that is precisely what characterises engineering practice. The technical dimension infuses almost every aspect of an engineer’s working day and cannot be avoided. That’s why this book is so necessary: there has not yet been any authoritative source or guidance to bridge the gap between inanimate technical issues and organisational behaviour. This book fills this gap in our knowledge, is based on rigorous research, and yet is written in a style which is accessible for a wide audience.

About the Author

Professor James Trevelyan is a Winthrop Professor in the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering School at The University of Western Australia. His main area of research is on engineering practice, and he teaches design, sustainability, engineering practice and project management.
He is well known internationally for pioneering research that resulted in sheep shearing robots (1975-1993).
He and his students produced the first industrial robot that can be remotely operated via the internet in 1994. The robot has been controlled by a conservatively estimated 500,000 people in dozens of countries.
He was presented with the 1993 Engelberger Science and Technology Award in Tokyo in recognition of his work, and has twice been presented with the Japan Industrial Robot Association award for best papers at ISIR conferences. These are the leading international awards for robotics research.
His teaching has also been well recognised: he was presented with the ASME Award for Mechanical and Mechatronics Teaching at the 2003 AAEE Conference in Melbourne. He has earned four distinguished teaching awards at UWA, and received a further best paper award at the 2004 International Conference on Engineering Education Research conference in the Czech Republic.
From 1996 till 2002 he researched landmine clearance methods and his web site is an internationally respected reference point for information on landmines. He was awarded with honorary membership of the Society of Counter Ordnance Technology in 2002 for his efforts, and was also elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
His most recent work is research on engineering practice that aims to understand how engineering work is actually performed, an aspect of engineering that has not been researched before. This work is helping to explain why engineering and process-oriented companies can typically lose 30% of their turnover from engineering, maintenance and operation mistakes. It also helps to explain why engineering services in the developed world seem to cost much more than they should, often much more than in industrialised countries, and is a significant factor inhibiting poverty reduction. Professor Trevelyan is working on education programs that could help overcome shortcomings in engineering training programmes in developing countries.

Insightful and practical

I haven't read this book in its entirety (few people ever will), but I've spent enough time with it to confidently endorse it.

The author describes what it means to be an expert practicing engineer, and provides wise guidance on how to reach and stay at that level during the course of an engineering career. Some of this guidance may appear counterintuitive to novice engineers, but it does resonate with my own thinking based on almost three decades of experience as a practicing engineer, and it's important to note that the book is largely based on extensive research by the author and his colleagues.

Regarding how to approach the book, don't be daunted by its 600+ pages in a smallish font. The book is structured such that you don't need to read it cover to cover, and it probably makes more sense anyway to dip into it here and there, according to your interests and needs. To most benefit from the book, rather than reading it once and then leaving it on the shelf, I suggest revisiting it over and over again through the course of years and perhaps decades ... so keep it handy!

A MUST HAVE for Italian Food Lovers!

If you have ever wanted to know more about Italian cuisine besides spaghetti and meatballs or lasagna, you have to own this book. When I went through culinary school we were trained classic French mostly, and then I worked under a very talented Italian chef and learned tons. She taught me lessons of patience, timing, and care for food like no other chef I worked for or with. This book reminds me of lessons learned in her kitchen. The recipes are authentic and remind me of my travels throughout Europe. This is a must for any home cook that wants to taste Italy.

WOW!!! This book is beyond my descriptive vocabulary. Hundreds of color photos!!! Magnificent recipes. Charming stories. Great paper. If love cookbooks or cooking, "get it--get it--get it"! It will truly thrill your soul. Then set aside some time to read and enjoy it. A half hour a day is a good start, but this delicious book will suck you in and time will fly by. You will have difficulty putting it down. The recipes are ones you can actually prepare, even if you are just starting out in the kitchen. Others are for the seasoned home cooks and even chefs. This is my favorite cookbook of all time. It is heavy for holding.

Not that close to the actual test. Better to just make use of the 70-697 book and takes tons of notes on the subjects they remind you to focus on.
I would not purchase this book if I knew how far off it would be. Not sure where they based the practice questions from, maybe an early version of the test?

In 1991, Broome's son Jack left for Cate, a California prep school he attended in hopes of getting into a prestigious college. Father and son had an especially close relationship, because Jack had been living with Broome for the four years since his parents' divorce. To maintain their connection, Broome wrote his son frequently, and these letters, though of limited interest, testify to his love for Jack. Much of the correspondence deals with values Broome considers important and would like to inculcate in his son, such as integrity, hard work and leadership. He also wants Jack to adhere to his conservative political opinions, and he has written several letters that strike a discordant note as nothing but diatribes against Democratic presidents, unions, communists and social welfare programs. Other letters express nagging concern about Jack's grades and Broome's apparently unfounded worry that his son will drink too much. Broome was recently injured by a drunk driver in a car crash, and included here is an essay Jack wrote about his father's accident.

An excellent book, one of which taught morals, values, and guidence for a young man away from home. Once i picked up the book and started reading it, I couldn't put it down, eagerly anticipating what the next letter written to his son, Jack, might entail. John Broome instilled into his son, in the form of letters, what he would have taught him at home,were he there and not in boarding school.Excellent portrayal of the love of a father--only wanting the best for his son.

This book is a real surprise! It is filled with tidbits of life, logic and love. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down until I had read it all. It would make a great gift for both fathers and sons

About the Author

Ruth Beckmann Murray, EdD, MSN, N-NAP, FAAN

Dr. Murray received her basic nursing education from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated with a baccalaureate degree from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri. She graduated from Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis with a major in psychiatric/mental health nursing, and in 1983 earned a doctorate degree in education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. During her professional career she was a school nurse at Lindenwood College, staff nurse on medical-surgical and psychiatric hospital units, and supervisor of obstetrics-gynecology. For 42 of her 48 years as an active professional, nursing education was her primary role. She retired as professor emerita from Saint Louis University School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri.

As an educator, she was active in the community in the role of mental health counselor and educator and as consultant to agency staff and schools of nursing locally and nationally. She conducted evaluation research and was a member of agency committees and boards of directors. In addition to being senior author of the first text on health promotion and development through the life span, she was senior author of several other books, authored many articles, and contributed chapters to a number of books. She received numerous awards for her contributions as educator, consultant, author, and for community service. She is a fellow in the

American Academy of Nursing, member of Sigma Theta Tau International, Delta Lambda Chapter, the American and Missouri Nurses Association, other nursing organizations, and Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice-Nursing.� As professor emerita, she has not really retired, but is “retreading.”� She is active on committees, as a board member of several community agencies, and with her church. She continues to do telephone crisis counseling, a professional activity for more than three decades. Free time is spent with people, her garden, botanical photography, and continuing to learn.

Judith Proctor Zentner, MA, BS, FNP-BC

Judith Zentner received her basic nursing education from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, St. Louis, Missouri. She received a bachelor of science degree with majors in English and history from Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana. She received a master of arts degree with a concentration in English/education from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Her nurse practitioner education was obtained from the University of North Carolina branch program in Asheville.� The last 25 years have been devoted to starting and directing a health program in industry with a primary care focus for employees and their families. Also, the last 25 years have been devoted to funding clinics and shelter for the homeless in Kenya, East Africa.� During the 44 years as a nurse and the 28 years as a nurse practitioner, Judith has used her background skills in English to teach both English and nursing in a college setting. She has held various positions in the emergency room, medical-surgical units, visiting nurse association, private duty cases, hospital occupational

health, and in an HMO.� In addition to being the co-author of the first text on health promotion and development through the life span, Judith has written six articles and has spoken to various college nursing students

and professional organizations. She is a member of several professional organizations and was honored with being selected for Who’s Who in American Nursing.� Going forward, Judith plans to continue with the Africa projects, substitute for nurse practitioners when needed, as well as have more time to spend with the children and grandchildren who live in other states.

Richard Yakimo, PhD, PMHCNS-BC, N-NAP

Dr. Yakimo received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral nursing degrees from Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology at Washington University in St. Louis. He is certified as a clinical specialist in adult psychiatric-mental health nursing and is especially interested in the mental health of older adults, trauma clients, and the psychosocial care of the physically ill.� Dr. Yakimo is currently an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Nursing, where he teaches psychiatric nursing and epidemiology and also serves as a consultant in evidence-based practice and research to a local hospital.� His research interests focus on the quality of care and the analysis of outcomes within nursing practice. Dr. Yakimo is a member of the American Nurses Association, the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, and Sigma Theta Tau, International, Honor Society of Nursing. He was recently elected as a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academies

of Practice.

I bought this book use and when I got it there were two stickers. the first said rented text and the other had the address to which I had to return it, can someone clarify this for me please

Good textbook for Health Promotion

Got the book on time and have been using it in my Health Promotion Across the Life Span course. It's an overall very interesting course and this book correlates well with it.
