The foreign currency market, says currency trader Krieger, affects "every aspect of economic and social order in the U.S. and the other nations of the world." Its volume exceeds the combined trading of the New York, London, Frankfurt, and Tokyo stock exchanges, and it trades 24 hours a day around the world. It arose after the United States went off the gold standard in 1971 and has been affected by various agreements among the G-5 or G-7 nations. Nevertheless, it still plays by a quintessentially free market--supply and demand rule, government intervention being hopeless at this volume, as history has proved. Two hundred thousand traders all trying to maximize their own profits act like Adam Smith's invisible hand to produce world trade stability. Krieger's description of his own trades as case studies and his use of trading jargon makes this work somewhat more technical than the average popular business book. Business collections will probably want this, though public libraries can pass.

An authoritative, if pedantic, introduction to the mercurial foreign-exchange market, where daily trading volume ranges up to $700 billion--and millions can be gained or lost on the judgments of youthful MBAs like the author. Having made a name for himself at Salomon Brothers and Bankers Trust before striking out on his own, Krieger has an insider's knowledge of a demanding profession. Unfortunately, he conveys only hints of the high-stakes game's risks and rewards, opting instead for a matter-of-fact recitation of its fundamentals. The author nonetheless provides an accessible rundown on the globe-girdling network in which nervy traders buy or sell American dollars, French francs, German marks, Japanese yen, and other hard currencies for the accounts of money-center banks, multinational corporations, securities firms, and a handful of private investors. He also makes a good job of clarifying the supply/demand forces that move the unregulated, round-the-clock market--and why it matters. But apart from self-congratulatory accounts of a few fondly remembered coups (including a killing in New Zealand kiwi), Krieger offers precious little material that's not available elsewhere in more detailed form. Indeed, he devotes the bulk of his text to a sketchy monetary history of the industrial world from Bretton Woods to the present. While the author hits such high points as 1971, the year the US went off the gold standard (creating a need for the foreign- exchange market now in existence), his narrative loses considerable momentum when he stops for explanatory background. Appreciably more interesting are Krieger's unhedged views on the greenback's prospects as a reserve currency and allied subjects. Worth noting, though, is that he borrows (without credit) from Michael M. Lewis (of Liar's Poker fame) a what-if scenario of the potentially dire consequences of an earthquake in Tokyo. Only the Technology used is dated

The reviewers are right, the book is dated.... BUT ONLY THE TECHNOLOGY THAT KRIEGER USED. The art of trading, the meat and bones of it, will NEVER BE DATED. That is why with basically just a telephone I bet Krieger could trade rings around all of us. So stop looking at the date of publication and look at the information published in this book.
This guy made a lot of money because he kept long hours and worked hard, and this book can help us novice traders understand that.

Interesting but dated

Krieger, I'm going to guess, didn't really know for sure what kind of book he wanted to write so he kind of included a bit of everything, but gave us not enough of anything.
It would have been great if the book had been written in the same style that Jim Cramer's book revealing how he ran his hedge fund was written, lot's of action and description. Krieger includes some of this, like how he'd spend 18 to 20 hours a day in front of a computer and wonder about his life. But he just didn't get in depth enough.
He covers a lot of history, but again, it was not enough if history was what you were looking for. In my case, it was a bit much, I really didn't need to hear so much about the specific names and dates, I wanted more of the individual trading side of his story, what he did and why. How it worked or didn't.
Of course, this book is totally out of date. For that reason, it is actually even more interesting in a way, as the author has no idea how FX trading will advance.
The book itself offers no specific strategies or advice on investing in the FX market, however, I guess that would make sense as when it was written, only pro's or people with a lot of cash could enter this market.
If Krieger were to decide to write a modern work, covering the topic of trading "inside the trillion-dollar world of currency trading" as the cover states, it would be something I'd love to read. I can't recommend this work currently, without the caveat that the reader realize it's limited value as far as trading in today's market. The history, however, is interesting as is the limited view the author gives us as to his trading. Whether the price of the book is worth paying, I'd recommend it only to the reader that is sure of what they are getting.

Great overview!

This is a great book. Mr.Krieger gives you the history of how foreign currency trading came about. He also provides you insight into how curreny trading work and more importantly how it fails.
He doesn't give specific strategies on how to trade currencies, but he does introduce vocabulary and resources to help you get started. In that respect the book is out of date. There is no discussion on the internet and how that has changed the face of currency trading forever.
This is a good book, a foreign exchange classic that wouldn't hurt any currency trader if he kept a copy on his shelf.

Audiobooks - its all in the narration

The story is what you expect from a Daisy Dalrymple - good characters and a plot that moves along at a good pace but doesn't throw in too many tricks. I bought the audiobook as I don't get the time to read any more and what a let down! When novels set in English country houses in the 1920s move off the page to the screen or the loudspeaker the secret of success is to match the sound to the period and location. Think Brideshead Revisited or Jeeves and Wooster. Too often in this production the American accent detracted from the story. Following the plot became secondary to listening out for the out-of-context pronunciations. Policemen were doing their dOODy (duty) by pursuing their inkwerries (enquiries); a Welsh character from GLAMOURgan (Glamorgan) first appeared to speak with at least an attempt at a Welsh accent (via South Africa) but through the course of the story this morphed into the standard "Dick Van Dyke cockney" used for any characters who weren't from the upper classes. All in all the distractions overcame the pleasure of the tale and I won't be buying another DD with the same narrator.

THE book on classical potential theory

There are few books left in print on this captivating subject from theoretical mechanics. Kellogg's presentation is clear and mathematically formal. This is an excellent reprint from Dover.
Now, if Dover would only bring back into print MacMillan's "The Theory of the Potential" and maybe try to reprint Sternberg & Smith's U. of Toronto Press published (and out of print) "The Theory of the Potential and Spherical Harmonics", they would have themselves a trilogy to corner the science book market for the classical treatment of potential theory.
Kellogg stands fairly well on its own, but the other two books just mentioned fill-in Kellogg's gaps.

Beautiful mathematics

A beautiful presentation which I much enjoyed in grad school. Now I need to return to the subject, but I can't find it in my lib. So I'm ordering another copy and looking forward to reading it again!

Having worked for some time in the Oil, Gas & Chemical industry, I have used this book to help me better utilize the ASCE 7 code for applying wind loads to pipe racks (inclusive of the piping and cable trays) and vessels. About the Author
Joshua Pien teaches Hindi and Urdu at the University of Pennsylvania. Previously he worked as a Hindi-Urdu language specialist at the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. He has also taught Hindi at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Fauzia Farooqui teaches Hindi and Urdu at Princeton University. She has also taught Hindi/Urdu at various other institutions, including the University of Virginia, the Defense Language Institute, University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, and the American Institute of Indian Studies in Lucknow, India.

A Culturally Relevant and Communicative Language Teaching Hindi Textbook

As a TESOL educator and Hindi learner, I can confidently recommend this textbook to anyone looking for a textbook for a university or high school class, as well as for those looking to study on their own. The book focuses on topics which are relevant and necessary for anyone planning to actually use Hindi in the future. It provides ample communicative teaching based exercises which require students to move beyond what many other Hindi textbooks feature (namely transformation drills) and actually try to use language in ways that they would outside of the classroom. The layout and text are clear and aesthetically pleasing and color and pictures make it more interesting than many other books on the market. The inclusion of a CD which demonstrates the pronunciation of vocabulary items and has material for listening exercises provides students with the opportunity to listen at home.

As an educator, I was thrilled to finally find a Hindi textbook which featured cultural references and a strong communicative focus. These factors were also encouraging for me as a student. Moreover though as a student I found this to be a fantastic resource as it is both comprehensive and easy to understand, even when I was initially learning via self-study. It has been instrumental in helping me to begin my Hindi learning journey and will be my most frequent reference guide in the future as I pursue additional study. I would highly recommend it for others!

disgust, shame and sadness

Neuroscience has developed to the extent that we now know that behaviour cannot occur in the body or the brain without some chemistry. This raises fascinating questions, among which is whether we are in charge of our brains, or our brains are in charge of us.
Through the insights and research covered in this book, leaders can learn much about the complexity of their own functioning, as well as how to be human and effective when relating to others.
There are eight primary emotions that make up the whole emotional spectrum of the feeling system. Five of these are survival emotions: fear, anger, disgust, shame and sadness, and all involve the release of cortisol. There are two attachment emotion spectrums: from love to trust, and joy to excitement. These are responses to oxytocin, dopamine and noradrenalin on brain receptors. One emotion, ‘surprise’, can turn the attachment into a survival emotion, or the reverse.
Leadership training has become a huge industry because the demand for effective leadership is so essential. However, there is little hard evidence as to why something works when it does, and this is where the work of neuroscience adds value. It is beginning to shed some light on how the brain works, and affects and is affected by behaviours, beliefs and attitudes.
The authors look at the issue of leadership from both the perspective of the leaders themselves and of the people they lead. I will focus only on the leader.
Leaders generally have more than average testosterone, the hormone linked to the achievement and maintenance of high status and dominance. Leaders also have lower levels of cortisol, the hormone that the body produces in response to stress.
Effective leaders are, generally, less stressed than subordinates. (This has been shown to be related to a good social life with friends and family, a key cushion against stress.)
High testosterone combined with low cortisol appears to be a predictor of status and dominance in people, whereas the presence of only one of these does not correlate with success in business at all. Similarly, leaders are likely to have a well-developed pre-frontal cortex, the part of the brain that is critical to the higher executive functions of the brain, such as focusing attention, self-control, planning and complex problem-solving.
Many characteristics have been identified as required for leadership. The good news is that elite performance, brain agility and engagement, can be learned. To this end, the authors provide a guide to bronze, silver and gold “brain Olympics.”
For bronze level performance, you should be getting good quality sleep for about six to eight hours each night. This amount of sleep allows sufficient time for the brain to rest and build up the resources required for resilience.
Generally, the use of digital media should stop one hour before going to bed because of the effect of the unnatural light from the screen on the pineal gland. “You certainly should not be sleeping with your smart phone or device next to you because of the effects of Wi-Fi and G or G signals on your brain waves.
One of the most important findings from brain science research concerns how the brain cleanses itself of toxic waste by-products whilst we sleep. Not getting enough sleep may prevent the brain from being able to remove neurotoxins. ‘Pulling an all-nighter’ far from being a source of bragging rights, costs about a standard deviation loss in one’s IQ score!
Silver level performance requires doing all that is described for bronze as well as getting healthy nutrition, hydration and basic exercise. Recommendations for this level include doing 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on most days. This has been reported to boost productivity at work on the days you exercise in the morning by as much as 15%.
The brain, although only 2% of body weight, consumes 20% of its glucose intake. This glucose comes from a healthy, balanced diet, rich in antioxidants and supplemented with vitamins and omega oils.
Hydration is critical, and even just a small per cent decrease negatively affects your memory, concentration and decision-making power.
For gold level performance, in addition to what is required for bronze and silver, you will need to learn, unlearn and re-learn. But you will also need to hone your ‘gut instinct’. Gut instinct is about intuition, judgment and decisiveness. This has a physiological basis due to the inordinately large nerve supply from our guts to parts of the brain concerned with instinct, mood and basic emotions.
The authors describe the purpose of this book as a way “to help you accumulate sufficient knowledge about how some of the major systems of your brain and body work, so that you may be able to take better care of the machinery, understand it when it becomes distressed, and enjoy the power of it when, properly cared for, it is working smoothly and well.”
There is much to learn from this book across a host of topics valuable to every leader who takes the responsibilities of leadership seriously.

A must-read for Leaders

Tara provides just the right dose of neuroscience details on the brain, which makes it very logical to understand how the brain functions at a basic level. Against this backdrop real life examples are woven, with suggestions to improve brain power. As a leader this book is a must-read and you will learn to be aware of situations and make subtle changes to your decisions/reactions
