Nice but flawed book

Japanese Fashion Designers (the work and influence of Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo) is a nice book especially for the price. One MAJOR flaw is that each designer get a section of their own with a photo of the designer at the beginning of the chapeter, well Issey Miyake's is wrong. It's not a picture of Issey Miyake, but of Naoki Takizawa (a former Issey Miyake designer). It's sad that the writer/editor did NOT notice this. How you can NOT tell that the photo is not of Issey Miyake? Very idiotic!

Outside of that the book is pretty good with info on newer designers. One of my personal favorites being Tao Kurihara (sadly she does not have her own line, Tao, anymore. It also has wonderful sections on the Japanese influence on Dutch and Belgian designers.

I do recommend the book, but that mislabeled photo is a BIG BIG screw up!!!!

Good info, well researched but flawed book.

This book is the perfect starting point if you want to do research on the japanese fashion/clothing designers and their work. It explains much not only about their work in general but also about their techniques and philosophies.

However, as the other reviewer pointed out, the book is flawed. My copy is missing pages 17-48 and substituted them with pages 81-112, which are again repeated in the order later on. This proved to be a major stepback in my research. I don't believe I can return the book as I already marked it with my notes.

Wikipedia does a better job than this author

Such an immensely disappointing read. The book is very small, with grainy black and white photos, and small font. The text about each designer is broad, and not informative. Wikipedia does a better job than this author, which is sad. I consider myself a novice of Japanese design, but I'm very interested in it, so it's unfortunate when you buy a book a don't learn much from it. Buyer beware- it's a total waste of money.

The author really knows this stuff. It is truly "real world methods for developing successful long-term marketing plans". This type of analysis is rarely found among the fast growth companies that we work with. Part of our efforts is to introduce the type of thinking found in this book. So although the focus of the book is to Fortune 500, make no mistake that any product company wishing to succeed needs to learn how to do this type of strategic market planning. The case study at the end of each chapter is very valuable. The thorough treatment right up to implementation strategies speaks to the completeness of this work. Yet the book remains quite readable. Too bad RIM never looked at the world this way.

Preface

A new edition of a text can mean many things. To authors, it is a chance to try again to get it right and readable, and to revise outdated sections. To teachers and students, the new edition is potentially a more readable and useful text. For the author's family and friends, it is a chance to reclaim the attention that was devoted to the revising process. And finally, it means that the first edition was successful enough that a revision is necessary. We hope potential users will agree that this second edition retains the best features of the first edition and corrects any flaws.

As in the first edition of Inorganic Chemistry, we have chosen to emphasize molecular orbitals and symmetry in many aspects of bonding and reactivity. For example, we have devoted an early chapter, Chapter 4, to a discussion of molecular symmetry and introductory group theory, with examples of applications to molecular vibrations and chirality. In later chapters, we have used group theory in a variety of other applications, including molecular orbitals of main group compounds (Chapter 5) and coordination complexes (Chapter 10), and infrared spectra of organometallic compounds (Chapter 13). Additional applications of group theory are included in problems at the end of these and other chapters.

The early chapters provide a review of atomic theory (Chapter 2) and simple concepts of chemical bonding (Chapter 3). Following the introduction to group theory in Chapter 4, this theory is applied to the construction of molecular orbitals in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 provides a discussion of various acid-base concepts, emphasizing applications of molecular orbitals to acid-base interactions. Following the advice of many, we have added a chapter on solid state inorganic chemistry (Chapter 7). Chapter 8 summarizes some of the most important aspects of main group elements and their compounds. The rapid development of chemistry of the fullerenes has been recognized in a discussion of these molecules in Chapter 8 and of fullerene complexes in Chapter 13.

Chapters 9 through 14 are directed to the chemistry of the transition elements. The first four of these chapters deal, respectively, with the structures, bonding, electronic spectra, and reactions of classical transition metal complexes. We have followed reviewers' advice in reorganizing these chapters into this sequence. For this edition we have moved the discussion of terms and microstates into Chapter 11 so it immediately precedes its most common use, interpretation of spectra of coordination complexes. We have written the section on terms and microstates so it can still be used with the discussion of atomic spectra (Chapter 2) for those who might wish to follow the organization of the first edition.

Chapters 13 and 14 provide an introduction to organometallic compounds, their spectra, and reactions. Special attention has been given to catalytic cycles and their application to problems of chemical and industrial significance.

We believe that seeking similarities in the chemistry of different types of compounds can be an extremely valuable exercise, and we have therefore discussed some of these important parallels in Chapter 15, placing particular emphasis on the isolobal analogy developed by Roald Hoffmann and on similarities between main group and transition metal clusters.

Finally, no text would be complete without a discussion of the role of inorganic compounds in biological processes and in the environment. We have therefore devoted the final chapter, Chapter 16, to selected aspects of bioinorganic and environmental inorganic chemistry.

We have chosen the topics and the level of treatment that works well for us. Every teacher has favorite topics, as well as least-favorite ones. We hope that our choice of topics allows potential users to tailor the contents to their own courses. We welcome suggestions for improvements in future editions.

In addition to selecting the most appropriate topics, we have attempted to make our text as accessible to students as possible. We have therefore increased the number of examples and exercises within the chapters, with answers to examples included in the chapters and answers to exercises in Appendix A. To encourage use of the literature in inorganic chemistry, we have retained the extensive references in the first edition and have also increased the number of end-of-chapter problems taken from the chemical literature. We hope that these will be useful to both faculty and students using this text. At the end of each chapter is a list of suggested supplemental readings, with brief comments on each.

We want to express special appreciation to our students, who have submitted many suggestions for improving the clarity and accuracy of this edition. We especially appreciate one student, Beth Truesdale (now a Rhodes Scholar), who reviewed every chapter in detail and made hundreds of valuable suggestions. A good one semester advanced inorganic chemistry text

It's hard to write an inorganic textbook that will please everybody. In general, there are three different types of undergraduate inorganic chemistry courses offered:
1) One semester Descriptive Inorganic (pre P. chem)
2) One semester Advanced Inorganic (post P. chem)
3) Two semester sequence (post P. chem)
Missler and Tarr's text is written for the second audience. If you are interested in a book that (i) is written at the jr/sr level; (ii) emphasizes group theory, molecular orbital theory, coordination chemistry, spectroscopy, reaction mechanisms and organometallic chemistry; and (iii) can be covered in one semester without killing the average undergraduate, then this is going to be a good text for you. If you are interested in descriptive chemistry or want a complete overview of inorganic chemistry, then you aren't going to be happy with M&T.
In my opinion, this is the best textbook on the market for a one-semester advanced inorganic course. My student's opinions of M&T were somewhat lukewarm, but at least it didn't inspire the scathing criticism that two other texts received in previous years. It's not a perfect book, but it is concise and well written for the audience it is intended to serve.

Appendix B is gone

I've used this textbook for my senior inorganic course for many years now. While this new edition has added problems and made some fairly major revisions, it has one major flaw in my opinion. The authors have omitted Appendix B and the chapter on bioinorganic is gone as well. The absence of Appendix B is particularly bad. It contains all of the relevant numerical data like ionization energies, electron affinities, radii, and orbital potential energies. The information is available online at their website, but considering the price of the book went up, I don't see why a student should have to chase that information.

The theory of optimal control is concerned with determining such controls which, at minimum cost, either direct the system along a given trajectory or enable it to reach a given point in its state space. This textbook is a straightforward introduction to the theory of optimal control with an emphasis on presenting many different applications. Professor Hocking has taken pains to ensure that the theory is developed to display the main themes of the arguments but without using sophisticated mathematical tools. Problems in this setting can arise across a wide range of subjects and there are illustrative examples of systems from as diverse fields as dynamics, economics, population control, and medicine. Throughout there are many worked examples, and numerous exercises (with solutions) are provided.

This book is for everyone who wants to design and build real digital circuits. It is based on the idea that, in order to do this, you have to grasp the fundamentals, but at the same time you need to understand how things work in the real world. Hence, the "principles and practices" theme.

The material in this book is appropriate for introductory courses on digital introductory courses logic design in electrical or computer engineering or computer science curricula. Computer science students who are unfamiliar with basic electronics concepts electronics concepts or who just aren't interested in the electrical behavior of digital devices may wish to skip Chapter 3; the rest of the book is written to be independent of this material as much as possible. On the other hand, anyone with a basic electronics background who wants to get up to speed on digital electronics can do so by reading Chapter 3. In addition, students with no electronics background can get the basics by reading Bruce M. Fleischer's "Electrical Circuits Review," a freely reproducible 20-page electronics tutorial available on this book's Web site, www.ddpp.com.

Although this book's level is introductory, it contains much more material than can be taught in a typical introductory course. Once I started writing, I found that I had many important things to say that wouldn't fit into a one-quarter course at Stanford or a 400-page book. Therefore, I have followed my usual practice of including everything that I think is at least moderately important, and leaving it up to the instructor or reader to decide what is most important in a particular environment. To help these decisions along, though, I've marked the headings of optional sections with an asterisk. In general, these sections can be skipped without any loss of continuity in the non-optional sections that follow.

Undoubtedly, some people will use this book in advanced courses and in laboratory courses. Advanced students will want to skip the basics and get right into the fun stuff. Once you know the basics, the most important and fun stuff in this book is in the sections on hardware description languages ABEL and VHDL, where you'll discover that your programming courses actually helped prepare you to design hardware.

Another use of this book is as a self-study reference for a working digital designer, who may be either of two kinds:

  • Novice.
If you're just getting started as a working digital designer, and you took a very "theoretical" logic design course in school, you should concentrate on Chapters 3, 5, 6, and 8-11 to get prepared for the real world.
  • Old pro. If you're experienced, you may not need all of the "practices" material in this book, but the principles in Chapters 2, 4, and 7 can help you organize your thinking, and the discussions there of what's important and what's not might relieve the guilt you feel for not having used a Karnaugh map in 10 years. The examples in Chapters 6, 8, and 9 should give you additional insights into and appreciation for a variety of design methods. Finally, the ABEL and VHDL language descriptions and examples sprinkled throughout Chapters 4 through 9 may serve as your first organized introduction to HDL-based design.
  • All readers should make good use of the comprehensive index and of the marginal notes throughout the text that call attention to definitions and important topics. Maybe the highlighted topics in this section were more marginal than important, but I just wanted to show off my text formatting system.

    • Chapter 1 gives a few basic definitions and lays down the ground rules for what we think is and is not important in this book.
    • Chapter 2 is an introduction to binary number systems and codes. Readers who are already familiar with binary number systems from a software course should still read Sections 2.10-2.13 to get an idea of how binary codes are used by hardware. Advanced students can get a nice introduction to error-detecting codes by reading Sections 2.14 and 2.15. The material in Section 2.16.1 should be read by everyone; it is used in some design examples in Chapter 8.
    • Chapter 3 describes "everything you ever wanted to know about" digital circuit operation, placing primary emphasis on the external electrical characteristics of logic devices. The starting point is a basic electronics background including voltage, current, and Ohm's law; readers unfamiliar with these concepts may wish to consult the "Electrical Circuits Review" mentioned earlier. This chapter may be omitted by readers who aren't interested in how to make real circuits work, or who have the luxury of having someone else to do the dirty work.
    • Chapter 4 teaches combinational logic design principles, including switching algebra and combinational-circuit analysis, synthesis, and minimization. Introductions to ABEL and VHDL appear at the end of this chapter.
    • Chapter 5 begins with a discussion of digital-system documentation standards, probably the most important practice for aspiring designers to start practicing. Next, this chapter introduces programmable logic devices (PLDs), focusing on their capability to realize combinational logic functions. The rest of the chapter describes commonly used combinational logic functions and applications. For each function, it describes standard MSI building blocks, ABEL programs for PLD realizations, and VHDL models.
    • Chapter 6 is a collection of larger combinational-circuit design examples. For each example, it shows how the design can be carried out with MSI building blocks (if appropriate), ABEL and PLDs, or VHDL that can be targeted to a CPLD or FPGA.
    • Chapter 7 teaches sequential logic design principles, starting with latches and flip-flops. The main emphasis in this chapter is on the analysis and design of clocked synchronous state machines. However, for the brave and daring, the chapter includes an introduction to fundamental-mode circuits and the analysis and design of feedback sequential circuits. The chapter ends with sections on ABEL and VHDL features that support sequential-circuit design.
    • Chapter 8 is all about the practical design of sequential circuits. Like Chapter 5 before it, this chapter focuses on commonly used functions and gives examples using MSI building blocks, ABEL and PLDs, and VHDL. Sections 8.8 and 8.9 discuss the inevitable impediments to the ideal of fully synchronous design and address the important problem of how to live synchronously in an asynchronous world.
    • Chapter 9 is a collection of state-machine and larger sequential-circuit design examples. Each example is carried out both using ABEL for a PLD and using VHDL that can be targeted to a CPLD or FPGA.
    • Chapter 10 is an introduction to memory devices, CPLDs, and FPGAs. Memory coverage includes read-only memory and static and dynamic read-write memories from the points of view of both internal circuitry and functional behavior. The last two sections introduce CPLD and FPGA architecture.
    • Chapter 11 discusses several miscellaneous real-world topics that are of interest to digital designers. When I started writing what I thought would be a 300-page book, I included this chapter in the outline to pad out the "core" material to a more impressive length. Well, the book is obviously long enough without it, but this material is useful just the same.

    Most of the chapters contain references, drill problems, and exercises. Drill problems are typically short-answer or turn-the-crank questions that can be answered directly based on the text material, while exercises may require a little more thinking. The drill problems in Chapter 3 are particularly extensive end are designed to allow non-EE types to ease into this material.

    Xilinx Foundation Tools

    Xilinx, Inc. (San Jose, CA 95124) has kindly allowed us to package their Foundation Express digital-design tools on two CD-ROMs with this book (in most domestic and international printings). These tools are quite comprehensive, including an ABEL compiler, VHDL and Verilog language processors, a schematic drawing package, and a simulator. Much of the software in the package is based on the popular Active-CAD™ and Active-HDL™ tools from Aldec, Inc. The package also includes FPGA Express™ software from Synopsys, which allows ABEL, VHDL, and Verilog designs to be targeted to CPLDs and FPGAs; popular Xilinx parts are supported by the included version. The Foundation tools were very useful to me as an author. Using them, I was able to write and test all of the example programs in the text. I trust that the tools will be even more useful to the students who use the text. They will allow you to write and test your own hardware designs and download them into Xilinx CPLDs and FPGAs in a lab environment. The student package support designs with up to 20,000 gates that fit into a single device. For a nominal fee, you can access a comprehensive set of Xilinx tutorials and two excellent Xilinx lab books online at www.prenhall.com/xilinx. These and other resources at this website will help you get the most out of the Foundation tools.

    Even if you're not ready to do your own original designs, you can use the Foundation tools to try out and modify any of the examples in the text, since the source code for all of them is available at the book's Web site, discussed next.

    An Excellent Reference Book!

    I purchased this book as a refresher on the Digital Techniques I learned years ago in the Air Force and through time drifted away from due to changes in job requirements. I am thoroughly impressed! The material is very concise, accurate, and applicable, and also sheds light on the historical aspects of the development of Logic Families. The necessary equations to apply the material to real-world applications are presented and explained in detail, and are easy to find in the text.

    The book/author has a website that is quite useful. Not being a student, I wrote to the author to gain access to the "worked problems" for the version of the book I have, and he was very congenial and helpful, providing me with the password and login info necessary to obtain copies of them.

    The only drawback was that the software that came with the book (3rd edition) is for a Windows 95 Platform. I am currently in the process of re-building a machine with the Windows 95 OS, as the books software is no longer available, nor is it upgradeable. The other option is to purchase the 4th edition with newer software (which I am contemplating), but be careful to verify the compatibility with your specific machine's OS before doing so. (One could always go back to the tedious "old-school" method of "graphing out the timing", but it is neat if you can do it both ways, and also provides a "check" of your work. The adventure is the best part of the task, yes?!?)

    All in all, it is an excellent reference/tutorial book for anyone just learning about Digital Design, as well as an excellent refresher for those like me who have not done any digital designing for several years. The book brought me back up to speed with just two weeks of earnest effort. It also plowed new ground on more up-to-date advances in the field, as well.

    I am pleased to have this book in my library.

    THE book for starters (& Ref)

    I am a CS guy too, and this book was required for the Digital Logic class. I love this book, cause it doesn't have any pre-reqs, and so anyone with an interest can pick it up and will have a good idea as to what digital circuits are all about.
    I'm sure that chapter 3, which deals with the analog circuitory isn't very amazing to CS guys, but my prof. insisted on learning that chapter, and I'm happy he did. We all cursed him for teaching us transistors and CMOS logic, but it was well worth it, and I'm happy Wakerly has included it in this book. All you have to do is read every word in Chapter 3, and you'll have a great idea.
    The scope of this book is excellent. Taking you from Binary numbers to RAM in one book is quite an achievement and it just flows. Also a good source to pick up VHDL. The diagrams are very clear and easy to understand.
    After reading through 3/4ths of this book, I was able to design a few components(different design) by myself without any help.
    I would recommend this book highly..And if you're CS, please don't think of Chapter 3 as a waste and skip it.. Cause if you want to get a better understanding and feel for things..you Better read it..I'm happy I was forced to.
