About the Author
Stuart H. James of James & Associates Forensic Consultants, Inc., is a graduate of Hobart College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology and chemistry in 1962. He received his MT(ASCP) in medical technology from St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, in 1963. Graduate courses completed at Elmira College include homicide investigation, bloodstain pattern analysis, and forensic microscopy. He has completed more than 400 hours of continuing education and training in death investigation and bloodstain pattern analysis. A former crime laboratory supervisor in Binghamton, New York, he has been a private consultant since 1981.
Jon J. Nordby, PhD, D-ABMDI, earned his advanced degrees from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst. He works as a forensic science consultant for Final Analysis Forensics, an independent consulting practice in medical-legal death investigation, forensic science, and forensic medicine. He specializes in scene reconstruction, and evidence recognition, collection, and analysis, including bloodstain pattern analysis, ballistics, firearm and gunshot residue testing and the investigation of police shootings. He serves the National Disaster Medical System as a medical investigator and forensic specialist with the Region X DMORT team.
Suzanne Bell, PhD, earned a B.S. degree in 1981 from Northern Arizona University with a dual major in chemistry and police science (criminal justice). She obtained her master’s degree in forensic science from the University of New Haven in Connecticut and her Ph.D. in chemistry from New Mexico State University. She joined the faculty of West Virginia University in 2003 in the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry. Her research interests include forensic toxicology, ion mobility spectrometry, and gunshot residue. She works with students at all levels (undergraduate to doctoral) in chemistry and forensic science and is active in international forensic science outreach.

Excellent Overview and Potential Textbook!

This text serves as an excellent overview of the forensic science field, and could serve very well as an introductory or intermediate level textbook. It was only lacking one thing that would be of value to making it a perfect instructional choice, and that is, labs. Hopefully, the authors are putting together an accompanying lab book! The chapter summaries, review material (vocab, primarily), and review questions are impeccable, and the references and further reading are exemplary.I am very happy with my purchase, and when we are ready to upgrade our forensic science textbooks (very soon, I hope!), I would go with this text without hesitation. Please, just prepare a lab book!

Entertaining to Read.

This astounding book is perfect for anyone studying forensics. The nine chapters of the book are highly informative, and like every great textbook, it has review questions, summaries, and vocabulary guides. The chapter Forensic Anthropology is all about studying human remains to learn about the person. While this book is probably focused more towards criminal investigation, the chapter will be of use to archeologists who have to study human remains. An entire chapter is devoted to entomology, because the presence of flies and maggots in the body can be used to determine the time of death. There’s a chapter on fire and explosives, because tracing for accelerants is a major part of criminal investigation where a fire occurs. Further chapters cover tracing bullets, identifying body fluids, and ethics.
One of the greatest things about this book is the use of case studies. The author includes stories about investigations into murders, thefts, accidents, and others which don’t involve crime. Each of these chapters would probably be a different specialty, since the average detective is probably not trained to do arson investigations. That would probably be the job of someone in the fire department.
I will give this book a big thumbs up as a starter for criminology students. It’s a great way to begin learning about forensics, and it doesn’t bore you with lots of jargon.

The information is very good. I know and respect many of the authors

I used this textbook for my undergraduate level Fundamentals of Forensic Science course, this spring. The information is very good. I know and respect many of the authors, which is at least one of the reasons why I chose this textbook. The 9 sections worked nicely with a semester class. I also enjoyed the flow of the book. I am a forensic anthropologist, by trade, but I have also studied the other disciplines. I will definitely utilize this textbook again, next year! Thank you!
