excellent introductory book on multivariate analysis

This is a nice well balanced text on multivariate analysis very suitable as a first course for graduate students. It provides a very good treatment of principal component analysis and discriminant analysis. Some specialized topics such as structural equations and factor analysis are not covered.

Terrible introductory book for graduate students in stats

Lack of clear examples made this book a terrible supplement to my multivariate statistics curriculum. I would recommend 'Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis' by Johnson and Wichern for the graduate student first tackling this difficult topic.

This is a wonderful book. Flury goes out of his way to provide thoughtful explanations rather than just the mathematical machinery. Thankfully this is not another bland exhaustive book of multivariate methods/recipes, but has carefully chosen topics including discriminant analysis, logistic regression, mixture models and the EM algorithm.

It was fun working through this book.

A funny and real and goofy and fun way to forget or just laugh at your worries.

Gemma Correll is a very funny woman who draws very funny pictures. How's that for a profound, insightful start to a review? Ms. Correll's new book, The Worrier's Guide to Life, reveals her anxious side. If you're the anxious type, you will find a kindred spirit here. Worried about rare diseases? Awkward social situations? Pet peeves? Body image? So is she.

Plus there's a lot of other random stuff thrown in here. Here humor is rather absurd and silly, like the "Less Appealing Seasonal Drinks," like "Yellow Snow Iced Tea" and "Turkey and Gravy Macchiato." Her "Ye Olde Video Games" include sure hits like "Dance Dance Industrial Revolution" and "Harpsichord Hero." I particularly enjoyed her more realistic women's magazines: "Vague: For the Fashion Backward and Just Plain Lazy," including a feature article on "What to Wear from the Pile of Clothes on Your Floor." "Out of Touch," which has pictures of people with the caption, "We have no idea who any of these people are!" "Mediocre Housekeeping: How to Get Away With Doing the Bare Minimum."

Her content is definitely female oriented. I think she'd acknowledge that me deal with anxieties and issues, to, but she's writing primarily "girl to girl." (Not to say a sensitive male like myself won't get the humor. . . .) Correll is funny and real and goofy and fun. The Worrier's Guide to Life will make you forget your worries . . . for a bit.

A Gift From a Friend

I was not expecting this book, but a friend of mine had sent it to me with the note that is was for one of her favorite worriers. I laughed because the front cover of the book were thought bubbles of things I had thought that day.

The inside was full of different chapters such as "Health & Hypochondria" (which hits the low hanging fruit of people who Google their symptoms and end up believing they're dying), "Fashion Frenzies", and other topics which cause the worrier to panic on an every day basis. The best chapter, by far, to me, was "Love and Other Anxieties".

Overall, this book of cartoons is one that speaks more to females, most likely, but even more to people who dislike socializing and find that most situations cause them anxiety.

I will say that some of the cartoons I did not find funny or relevant or they were oddly sorted, which took the review from a five star to four star, but I still got a laugh out of this. I think this would be a great gift for an anxious person with a sense of humor!

I love this book. I've looked back and laughed at some of the images several times. Some of the comics address heavy topics such as depression and anxiety (which I have experienced) in a light hearted way.

Another fun adventure with Jake!

This is the latest instalment of the Jake's series and it is another fun read. In this short chapter book Jake and his classmates are all watching and talking about the TV show, Junior Chef. Jake is initially not interested, but when he finally gives it a chance, he loves it. He and nana begin to experiment in the kitchen and he actually makes a few dishes that he and his father enjoy. When his school decides to hold their own Junior Chef competition, Jake is selected as one of his grade level contestants. He wants to make the most creative meal he can think of...but of course it does not go according to plan! I actually cringed just a little when he talked about his recipe. I liked Jake's creativity and ingenuity, and how he and his family were able to laugh off his mistakes in the end. A great chapter book for children ages 8 to 12. I think this book will especially appeal to boys. Should be in all school and class libraries.

A breezy read, though not terribly deep

Bilson is obviously a fan of the film. This isn't one of the more in-depth or scholarly analyses in the BFI series, but it does make a good companion piece to the film (and to the 1952 "The Thing From Another World" film version of the short story - "Who Goes There?" - that Carpenter's 1982 film is based on).

In a nutshell, Bilson asserts that the film critics who panned the film upon its initial release completely missed the boat and the point. This film was original in so many underappreciated ways, and it remains to this day a standard-bearer.

The author explores the idea that the titular Thing may as well be, for all intents and purpose, female. That, and that Carpenter and screenwriter Bill Lancaster were both very brave and correct to dodge conventional Hollywood wisdom by casting the film with all-male and mostly lesser-known actors, and that the timing of the making of the film thankfully preceeded the political-correctness period that now practically mandates a Rainbow Coalition of skin colors. Clearly, Carpenter was focused solely on the story, and kept all other interferences at bay.

One of my favorite assertions that Bilson makes, and I am certainly in agreement with her, is that if the AFI list of Greatest Film Quotes of All Time allowed for profanity, "The Thing" would be well-represented!

This isn't the most thought-provoking BFI entry, but it is affectionately written, for sure, without being kissy-kissy.

I still love this book series, however. I always ask for a BFI book for my birthday. Next BFI books up for me: "The Shawshank Redemption", "Crash", and "The Thin Red Line".

Another proud addition to the BFI series.

The BFI sometimes pick the wrong writer to cover certain films for their Film Classic series. Anne Billson is one of the better writers. She doesn't confuse the reader and covers the film from start to finish. The only draw back is that it does sometimes seem that she is just recounting the story, using her own words to add tension, but she does make up with some interesting commentary.

As a devoted fan of John Carpenter's The THING, I was thrilled to come across Anne Billson's definitive tome about Carpenter's greatest film. Here Ms. Billson eloquently defends what she deems a horror classic. Describing the film scene by scene and injecting a lot of personal theory, Anne Billson has lovingly penned a tribute to the best monster movie of the last 30 years. A must for any fan of John Carpenter and horror films. Only Paul M. Sammon's wonderful Future Noir comes close to equalling the excellence of Billson's book.

I received this book on my birthday, which was a great present. I could not put it down once I started reading it. I love how Willie and Patricia were so transparent. I really enjoyed their testimony. I met Willie at my church when he use to work as the Youth Pastor. What I love about him is that he is very friendly. When he speaks to you, he makes you feel like you are the only person in the room. He is very into people, and he truly cares about them. The youth at my church just love him.

I need book 2!!!!

This is my first Cree Storm book. I have to say not only did I love this book but I'm going to buy everything else this author has to offer!! She is not a one-click for me.

I feel in love with Asher, Asa and Damien!! I loved that none of these men were weak or whinny. They are all very strong men in their own right and each bring something different to them bond and their world. They are true mates. The character building is amazing! I love these men and I can wait to see them again!!

Damien’s Past Mates by Cree Storm took me by surprise. I wasn’t sure how a book that tosses a person back in time one hundred years would work out without blurring of the lines of past/present. Cree Storm pulled it off.

Recently finding his lover in bed with not one, but two men sends Damien rushing from his home and onto the path to his future. Car broken down on the side of the rode, Damien follows a light which leads him to Capulet. While in Capulet, Damien discovers an unknown world and his two mates.

Asher and Asa were wonderful characters. Strong alpha wolves- struggling with the knowledge that their packs are enemies yet they are mates. When Damien comes into their lives the men realize he is their mate and soon Damien becomes the glue that holds them together.

Ms. Storm did a nice job of making sure the past characters did not know what future Damien spoke of as he attempted to explain the nuances of 2015. The action was well-described and kept me intrigued as a reader.

Together the trio was loving and sexy. Insta-love, but Ms. Storm did a nice job of explaining this in the book.

I look forward to reading more in the Capulet series.

This is another awesome book by Cree Storm

This is another awesome book by Cree Storm. I couldn’t put the book down until I found out if Damien got his happy ending. Damien founds out that his boyfriend is cheating on him, he takes off and drives until his car breaks down. Love the how Damien went from 2015 to 1915. When he meets Asher he feels instant lust for him, when he finds out that he is a wolf shifter, things change. Damien does not believe it that he finds the one that is supposed to be his mate and Asher wants him to share with another. Love the twist of Asher, Asa and Damien relationship.
Since the wolf packs have been banished by the council, Asher and Asa have not been able to complete their mating since they are Alphas of the fighting packs.
Will they be able to work together and find a way to save the packs and stop the war and banishment?

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE BOOK
Highly recommend this book, you will really enjoy it

If I was to recommend just one "clinical" book on the subject of aromatherapy....

I am taking a graduate level aromatherapy class in college and although I have about 4 textbooks, this seems to be the book that the other 3 cite the most often. This book is clear and very interesting. I actually enjoy reading it and who can say that about a textbook (then again it's aromatherapy so not shocking that's it's a little fun). If I was to recommend just one "clinical" book on the subject of aromatherapy, so far it would have to be this one.

”The [poets of the] defeated must, therefore, create their own myth to ‘resist the myths of power and the powerful, and the songs of the victor that erase him from history’. Defeat can be turned into a source of energy, a way of confronting the fact of one’s existence. Such deep awareness can compel one to keep working, striving, and expressing oneself: ‘I renew myself by acknowledging defeat, and I resist through poetry and language because this area is not defeatable’” (140)

This biography was a valuable read for me on many levels. I read it during “Operation Protective Edge”, another one of those terrible euphemistic sell-labels that the Israelis and other militaries use for their bloody actions to try to mask mass murder in the name of self-defense. Nearly 2,000 Palestinians killed by the Israeli invasion, at least 75% civilians. Over 458 Palestinian children murdered. All the usual lies used to sell the war on the Israeli side, but the asymmetry is clear. 63 Israeli soldiers killed. 3 civilians. All after the invasion of illegally occupied Gaza. And, even during this truce, there still is Israeli shelling, and still, Palestinians are dying. I just finished reading Israeli historian Ilan Pappe’s “The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine”, which covered each portion of the European Zionist colonization and ethnic cleansing of the indigenous peoples of Palestine (this is not saying that there were not indigenous Jews in Palestine, there were, but they were only 5% of the population in the late 1800’s, and lived in peace with the Palestinian Christians and Muslims, it was only the secular nationalist movement of Zionism that disturbed that peace), and reading this biography soon after was definitely beneficial, and there was great benefit in the author’s organization of phases in Darwish’s life, as they were largely patterned on phases in Palestinian history and resistance. And even now, as so many die, all of the questions Darwish wrestled with remain painfully relevant. But I feel that, even in defeat, all of us who can raise our voices with the spirits of the murdered, the dispossessed, the exploited, the oppressed, in Palestine and throughout the world, that we must fight still in language and poetry for our voices, and the hearts that give them fire, they are undefeatable.

The biography only has excerpts from poems, and though many of them are powerful excerpts, as a reader you invariably long for more. This does not, in my opinion, detract from the book, but it does leave you hungry for more. This is true, especially, for poems like “The Speech of the Red Indian”, which is an extremely powerful poem. The parallels and connections between the treatment of Palestinians and Indians are many, and are based on actual historical precedent, as the "founding fathers" of Israel planned to do to the Palestinians as the white man had done to the Indians in America, and said so explicitly.

One ethnic cleansing inspired another.

It is a long poem, but worth reading. [...]....

One of his early poems on loyal and unconditional love for the land his people were robbed of has these words, and they are beautiful:

Your lips are honey, and your hand
a cup of wine
for others…
and the silk of your breast, your basil, your dew
are a comfortable bed
for others.

And I am the sleepless one lying by your black walls;
I am the sand’s thirst, the shiver of nerves in firesides.
Who can shut the door before me?
What tyrant, what fiend?
I will love your nectar
even though it is poured in the cups of others….

Mahmoud Darwish

The fact that Darwish was imprisoned or put on house arrest many times for publishing poetry (as other Palestinian writers were for publishing their works) shows the essentially repressive nature of the Zionist vision, which cannot even bear to let the poets' words be free in their occupation. They tried to limit and destroy Arabic literature for decades, especially in the earliest decades following the first great ethic cleansings of Palestine fearing its power.

I think, in general, we should ponder this, and when we read, read as freedom fighters. And we should write knowing that words have relevance, even in defeat, our words and hearts can fight on. All of us who have been standing in solidarity with Gaza now, as children are murdered, as innocents are murdered, as humanity is murdered, have been reading voices from Gaza through the Internet, have seen videos and pictures of our brothers and sisters there, and we remember their words and remember their humanity. God willing, the world is waking up.

Darwish was always one in solidarity with the oppressed throughout the world, and though he was tied to Palestine and its people, he never gave up this solidarity. And this, I believe, is how we all should be.

Absolutely loved this book. Every Palestinian household should possess this book. It brought Darwish's poetry to life.

A Poet One Day

Mahmoud Darwish lived much of his life as a Palestinian in Israel, the land where he had been born before it was Israel. He was a poet who tried to live those incompatible realities in and through his poetry. This book examines Darwish's poetry, and ultimately his life, by exploring the different phases of his life in Israel, then as he moved out of Israel and landed in Beirut affiliated with the PLO, then further removed in a later post-PLO phase in Paris, to the final stage in Ramallah. Each stage has distinctive poetry reflecting specific poetic and philosophic aims.

This is a book of critical approaches to the poetry (and life and politics) so beware if this is not your cup of tea! My one complaint about this book is the lack of complete poems or the provision of a rationale for why they, or at least longer fragments, are not present. I would have appreciated more of an opportunity to experience Darwish's writing in addition to the poetic and political theory.

Naively, I requested this ARC thinking I would receive a "simple" book of poetry. Happily for me, I received a book which explained the purpose behind the poet, the context for it all, without which the poetry would be words on the page. I will provide a selection from an epic from his last phase. The poem is Jidariya (Mural) and, for me, it seems to stand easily on its own.

One day I will be what I wish to be,
one day I will be an idea, carried by a
sword to free a wasteland with a book in
hand, as if it were rain falling on a
mountain aching, aching with the grass
bursting through its soil, somewhere
where power had not won nor where
justice had become a fugitive. One day I
will be what I wish to be...one day I will
be a poet...
I am the message and the messenger.
I am the tiny addresses and I am the mail.
One day I will be what I wish to be.
